Those Elm rounds would fit nicely into my stoves no splitting needed.Once dried they'll burn hot and long.Good stuff.

All of the elm I cut today will get halved next year. The next time I cut there I’ll get more of the top, which is smaller diameter stuff I don’t mind leaving in the round. I wasn’t planning on cutting any more live elms, but this was a still-green blow down from earlier this year and too easy to pass up. That and it was laying beside a downed locust so it needed to be moved anyway. Might as well firewood it.

How did you get permission? Is it DG ground or another owner? Just curious.

So a year ago Brad came up to my area to hoard some black locust across town (big surprise, right?) He stopped at my house for a quick visit. I then took him down the road just to look at the expansive black locust grove behind the Dollar General. As we were poking around the woods BS'ing, a fellow came over to see what we were up to. Turns out he's the hired groundskeeper for the property there. We got to talking about all the downed trees and mess there in general. When we told him we were looking for firewood, he immediately called up the owner of the building and acreage around it. The owner then gave us the verbal go ahead to cut as much as we wanted, dead and living trees. The woods are kind of a hangout spot for shady characters doing shady things, so as far as the owner is concerned, we're doing him a huge favor (and saving him the cost of hiring a professional crew to come in and cut)

I got the strong feeling the owner was a bit of a "slumlord" but hey, I'll gladly take him up on his offer :) He apparently owns other properties too (strip malls, commercial buildings etc.) and if I wanted to, I could probably acquire firewood at his other properties as well. The main appeal for me with this location is it's literally at the bottom of my road, less than a 2 minute drive.

Is there more barkless closer to where that trunk is laying on the edge of the pavement?

There is... was... is. LOL That's where I was cutting from today. There's plenty more there but I've been putting a dent in the easier stuff. Have to do a little bushwhacking as there's barkless buried all over that area.

LOL there's enough wood there to keep me busy for literally years, if I wanted to. Lots of locust, a few smaller mulberries, black cherries, Norway maples, etc. That's just the stuff that I'd go after for firewood. There's more that I wouldn't even bother with too (cottonwood, willow) I really might pick away at it a little every year. It's hard to beat being so close to home and convenient.
