Got a truckload of what I believe is some sort of hickory this morning. It's been standing dead for years and came down before I got the chance to cut it down. The other half of the tree will come down when I get done cleaning up everything that is laying down. That may be a while.....

Here's the other half and what the bark looked like.

I dont think it was as it didn't have the little vein that runs down the very center of all of the ash I've seen around here. With that being said, I am certainly no expert and you may be right.

Hickory has a darker center. That looks like elm to me, of the red variety.

I'd agree with that...love that stuff...plus, dead standing (until it wasnt) splits nice and is often ready to burn (or darn close!)

You and Eric Wanderweg are probably right then. I've always been told the dead standing stuff we have around is elm but after last week's haul I was leaning more towards hickory. Especially because it split so nice.

Cut and quartered a truckload this afternoon after family Christmas festivities. Not entirely sure what it is but it seems like a softer wood.

I'm almost thinking a type of maple.

That was my initial thought as well. The leaves didn't look like basswood to me though (what was left of them anyway, I'll post a pic below). I showed it to a guy I work with who used to be an arborist and he thought either basswood or some sort of maple as Stephiedoll also suggested.

Pic of other half of tree with some foliage still attached...

Whatever it is, it is a softer wood and will be put in the stacks for shoulder season.

My bad. I did see that pic. Pretty sure its tulip poplar although ive never seen one with that heartwood color. They hold the seeds into the Winter IME.

My vote was poplar family as well.
Tulip around here has yellow with patches of purple heartwood
