Walnut wood I.d.

ok guys. Central indiana. Took this living tree down assuming it is a black walnut. It is way lighter inside than any black walnut I've seen here. I bid this job when leafs were still on. So I know for a fact it is in the walnut family. It has the distinct walnut smell when cut or split. I gets darker as I dries, but not black walnut dark. Could this be butternut or English walnut? I've only ever cut black walnut around here

 

I would say that is definitely black walnut. White walnut/butternut is cream/yellow colored all the way through

Looks like the Black Walnut I'm accustomed to here in Iowa.

Pretty sure it's Black Walnut. English Walnut has a more consistent color from heart wood on out.

Most of ours are a dark rich purpleish

 

Walnut a rare score for me but i would call that black walnut. BW has a chambered center pith and smells like iodine.

BW then. I learned about that on here a couple years back.

 

Very easy splitting stuff too. Been nearly two years since ive scored any.

 

Ive dropped a bunch of them,most for my father inlaws mill or for buddies to have the wood
This is my first big score of it to bring home there's quite a lot of walnut in central indiana

 

With having access to a small mill id like to score some for such. Ran across some back in the Summer but the guy wanted to retire off the two logs he had. The tree guy i know knows they are worth money for milling so wont get any from him. They are around here but somewhat scarce.

 

Alot of this tree would've gone to the fils mill.
But my company is new and I haven't purchased a tractor yet. I had to split a lot of the rounds in the field to load them in the trailer.

 

I do that often for ease of handling. Rare that i can split wood directly off the truck. My back isnt as young as it used to be either.

 

Cuts and splits super easy for sure. Only negative IME is it leaves behind an abundance of ash.

I’ve cut a fair amount of BW and it never showed color change like the above pics. The rounds and split pieces sure are a good match for what I’ve seen. Always thought it was pleasant smelling.

 

Definitely looks like the black walnut I’ve dealt with.

 

Black Walnut for sure. Am I the only one that thinks the heart wood in the first log looks like an owl?
