buZZsaw BRAD and I got permission to cut here a year ago, and today was the day for plans to materialize. Many living and blown over barkless trees that had been on the ground since the October snowstorm of 2011. Excellent candidates for firewood. I loaded up with mostly locust, with a little bit of apple thrown in. Brad’s heaping load was locust and mulberry. Great times and great firewood today.

Agreed, this is the way I’m hoarding it from now on. The bark takes up too much room and it reeks anyway :)

My ride home was rather uneventful. It was a bit of a grunt going up your hill. I did go into DG and got chalk. Bought some gigantic ones for the grandkids.

Oh, and be sure to point out to the boys where not to play for a while. :emb: ;)

You never know around here whether wood will get scooped up overnight or sit around for decades before someone sees the value in it. Given this score’s location in an area full of mostly multi family houses and rentals, I’m not surprised it sat this long untouched. I’m more amazed that 2011 somehow got 12 years behind us already. :BrianK: I got married that year, my cat had kittens, my older son was born, we had a major flood in August that put huge sections of the town underwater, then the freak Halloween snowstorm in October that left most of the state out of power for close to a week.
Then zooming out even further, there’s a story as to why this extensive black locust grove was here to begin with. In 1955 a hurricane stalled out for days over New England, and the floods that followed ruined entire towns. In the aftermath, the Army Corps of Engineers built dams all over the place, and in many municipalities black locust trees were planted along the river banks to help hold the soil in place. That’s where these were growing, close to a small stream that originated uphill somewhere near my house. So well over half a century after all the trees were planted, and the grove sprawled out to be the firewood gold mine nobody notices.
