Whipped up a quick splits cradle for dad before the game this morning. We had been cutting at about 20” for his open fireplace but the insert needs about 16/17”. So he’ll be able to load this up and use the saw to cut them shorter. Used scraps I had laying around. The backboard is a piece of walnut cut-off from when I had some band milled. I’ll be delivering this after the football game today and maybe try it out. More pics when I do.
Somehow missed this thread. Simple and effective gets it done. Nice repurpose Jason. Nice having lumber scraps around.
Definitely nice having scraps. Never know what you'll need. I delivered it but he wasn't home. Maybe this weekend we'll get some pics.
Tried it out today. Worked a charm. My 357’s felling spikes slid down the edge for an excellent cut. That was by accident but it turned out great. Cut 4 of these, almost all ash. We did cut some of dads white oak to test it to make sure it’s ready to burn.
Totally not sure on how much will need to get shortened. I was cutting for an open fireplace so lengths weren’t consistent. I’d say less than 1/2 of what we moved needed cut today. And I didn’t have my MM so he’s going to do the sizzle test. I’d have to dig up pictures but I think that wood has been split 2 years now.
I built something like that 6 years ago to trim down tree service wood. I did mine 38" so I can do alot with 2 cuts. Now I just keep stacking long cuts in it as I get them, and cut it when filled. I wanted to cut it a couple days ago, but I think I have a hornets nest in there somewhere. Need to wait for cold weather. I have a video on my YouTube channel of cutting with it. My channel is 106pricey. Hopefully I can get more videos up.
Helped dad trim some more splits this morning. He’s cut into the cradle a bunch but it’s still usable. Walnut, ash and some cherry. Haven’t run the 357 for a while so it got fresh mix and some run time. He has an old trash bin for chunks. With the upcoming heat, he plans to work at it a little each morning. He’ll be 78 in December.
Nice. Maybe i should make one of those. PITA when i have a couple longs from a score and they hang around and get in the way.
I try. I have been doing it since I started walking. My dad had a huge garden at home, and 5 acres of farmland that we also planted. My videos need some work, but I am no youtube pro.
