Had a couple loads stacked up at the parents and finally got over with the splitter to process it. Probably 3-4 hours. We worked slow and took a long lunch break, lol.
Some older pics of the stack.

Nice little jag of wood. Dad just wanted to pitch splits and stack later.
Some beauty shots of his stacks. L to R is walnut, ash, cherry.

Nice work Jason & dad! Some great looking stacks too. How was the heat there? Humidity crept up with a high of 90ish here today. No firewooding as we have the grand daughter here.

We started about 9:30 this morning. His lower yard is all shade and temps were mild. I didn't soak a shirt or my dew rag. After getting home @ 2p and cleaned up, I mowed yard. In direct sun, I think it had to reach 90 here too.

Not sure on an official number but it had to be close to 90. We quit before that though.
Those large rounds came from a very dead standing chestnut oak. I told dad to keep those separate and burn only if needed this year. I think he has enough to get them through this winter.

I grew up with wood for primary heat, oil secondary. Dad never got ahead with wood. He was one of those guys that cut in the spring. burn in fall/winter. This whole getting ahead idea is unnatural to him. If I get him too far ahead, he'll burn more than needed cause he has it. I try to get him to save wood, but so far it really doesn't happen. Most of everything I'm taking there now is tops from dead standing chestnut oak, and I'm confident it will be ok for the end of his burn season.

Your dad and mine must be the same vintage.
    Same exact story here.
His last words to me about my stacks,.were that they'll rot before I get to use the wood.
Nice you get to work with your dad like that.

Back over to the parents today. Ran the splitter for a couple hours. Split some of the horse chestnut, some oversize ash and some oak mixed in.

This was separated to get trimmed to fit his new insert. Needs 17” max & it was all cut for their open fireplace.

Always a great day when I spend time with pops. Lifting stuff onto the splitter isn’t easy for him but once split, he likes the rest.

Some quality time for sure. Fond memories of making firewood with my dad. He'd be 101 on the 24th.
Hope your dad is working safe on the splitter. Yeah ill be battening down the hatches tomorrow.

Dad will be 79 on the 28th. I basically just had him running the lever, but when there are small enough pieces, he does run it some himself. A friend of mine lost his dad this week and it made me want to spend more time with mine.

That horse chestnut reminded me of box elder, poplar or light silver maple. I kept trying to mix the ash, oak and it so he has some quality wood in there too. Can’t say I’ll ever seek it out again. Most of it looked spalted like this:

Lost my dad August of 2010...he was 87. Mom passed last year at 96. Hopefully the longevity gene is in me too. Dont mind getting old as long as the quality of life is there.

I scored HC once and didnt like it. Hard to split and light when dried, but it burns. I wouldnt take it again either.

Oh wow, this stuff breaks apart with the wide part of the wedge, about 4-6” is all it’s taking.

I hope to have both parents around for a while for sure. My one grandmother lived to 96 as well. She was sharp as a tack the whole way. Grandmother on dads side had dementia, so I get your point about quality of life.
