Ugh. 16’ total, all 6”, with single wall stove pipe and triple wall chimney. It could be worse and I would try it too. The likely troubles are at low burns and smoke rollout when reloading.

If you replace with 8” be sure to use double wall stove pipe to the ceiling, and then double wall insulated class a to the cap with no bird screen.

That is exactly what I will do (to all the above). Thanks!

I have double wall from stove to ceiling, then all triple wall from ceiling through roof to cap.

I guess here's another question that I should ask.....

By running this BK 40 on the 6 inch pipe and chimney, is there any risk of damaging the stove in any way or, is my biggest risk the smoke feeding out into the room, which, obviously, I want to avoid as well. I Don't think the wife would be excited about the living room smelling like the smoker. :D

Won't damage the stove, you'll just potentially have poor performance, and smoke issues

Good to know. If I have any issues, I'll just replace the entire 6 inch exhaust system with the 8 inch

How much is a little bit? Previous home the stack was ~1-2" off centering the stove on the hearth, an adjustable 45* did the trick.

I was hoping to move the stove about 3 inches closer to the wall. Basically, two 45's put together to give me about a 3 inch move backwards

Hmm...not sure how much back to back 45's would affect things...still wouldn't help anything I'm sure, its adding turbulence.

Well, we've reached a day where we can actually discuss some smoke and the stove with a 6" chimney. I woke this morning to a very heavy fog, only about 1/8 mile visibility, and 29 degrees. My house was again, pleasantly warm, almost too warm at 79 degrees, but hey, better than the alternative! You can see in the picture off the patio the air was very heavy with no breeze.

So, now lets talk smoke. While I haven't had issues with smoke issues so far, today would be different. When I opened the stove, the coals were glowing hot. I loaded in a few small pieces of wood on the coals and they began to instantly start generating ALOT of smoke. A small wiff of smoke exited the top of the door.

I want to get off on a rabbit trail for just a moment. While using the Hearthstone Heritage, I had experienced multiple occasions where smoke would come out the door if I loaded from the front door instead of the side door. Anticipating this could still potentially happen with the Blaze King, even more so because of the 6" flue, I had previously made up my little tin foil baffle as pictured below. What you are looking at is a piece of tin foil folded about 4 times to make it quite stiff. I bent a small 3/4 inch piece on top. What I did this morning was slide the tin foil in between the door and the stove as I opened the door. This created a much smaller door opening and forced the stove to suck air through the smaller opening, hence, no more smoke exiting the stove. I held the foil in place using the little magnet you also see in the picture. You can see in the picture, the smoke is rolling heavily behind the tin foil. That being said, nothing entered the room. When finished loading, I simply removed the magnet and slid the foil out as I closed the stove's door. I told my wife I was going to replace the chimney this weekend with the 8 inch but then, I don't know, she basically talked me out of it because we even had issues with the front door on the Heritage and that stove DID have the correct pipe/chimney, and the correct length. So, I might just continue to use my little tin foil baffle if needed until I decide to upgrade to the 8" or not. It's only a difference of $ .03 for tin foil or $2,800 for new 8".

    Give me some feedback.

We moved back to wood from the pellet stove because the pellet stove is SO darn dusty. Reloaded the stove the other day, did not see or smell any smoke roll out at all. I had to go outside for something, crisp fresh air, after coming back in I went to kids bedroom and smoke smell had wafted towards her room. Glad it was not microscopic pellet ash/soot that hangs in the air and it didn't bother her lungs but still puzzled. (we are burning a BK40 too, less than a month so far). Anyway, I'm not going to worry about it, if your stove is burning/performing well and that smoke doesnt bother family members I lean with your wife. It is a bit weird with a hot stack and I assume your bypass and thermostate were wide open. Maybe blame in the barometer and fog?

Good information! I appreciate the comparison! Are you burning on 8" flue/chimney or 6"?

What's interesting is, the smoke exhausted perfectly fine with the tin foil in place, so it isn't like the stove "can't" exhaust the smoke. It just decided the door was a much easier option. Once the tin foil was in place, it was a non issue.

Good point! I think my Hearthstone Heritage was worse if you used the front door instead of the side door.

Ahhhh, ok. My wife told me I was going to be really ticked off if I spend another $2,800 only to find out I still might get a puff of smoke into the house. She told me to run it and see how it goes. I'm thinking I can't argue with that wisdom.

Just curious, does your smoke always fully exit the chimney or are you still getting those times when it wants to seep out if the door is fully open?

Of the 8 different wood burners I've owned/operated, none off them were 100% smoke free on loading...if the weather is just right (or wrong) it can happen, no matter your chimney. I've never had any of them that were a real problem though...just some a lil better about it than others.

This is only really the third indoor wood stove I've "lived" with since I was 5 years old. 4th was an outdoor boiler.
