I always said next time I move is to move out of the city…but things change and your plan goes out the window. We moved across the city…major PITA, but it’s closer to kids school and at least half an hour closer to our farm property. And another bonus, the new house has a fireplace. Just got it swept and safety checked for the insurance company. Which meant fire on our first day. My dried ash is getting a nicer end than the firepit!

Here are a couple picks. Do you guys use the rack? Made it to keep the fire going and it only really started when it was in the back on the floor. Anyways I will look into putting in an insert in the future. Not as « charming » but actually puts out heat.

Maybe you'll be getting an insert?

I lived in 3 houses that had fireplaces. Only used one of them a couple of times in the fall and that was it.

But, they were the old super inefficient type.

Doesnt get much better and yes we always used a grate.

As stated, I see an insert in your future. World of difference between it and a normal fireplace.

I put an insert into our FP here at our house. It's just as charming as a FP and actually puts out heat and it makes the wood last a lot longer.
So many more pros that outweigh the smells and sounds of an open FP

I've used a grate when I had one. Rented a beach house on an island for two years and it didn't have one for a while and just let the ashes pile up, mostly to protect the concrete floor. Heated the place quite well, but yeah it ate some wood. Mostly shipping skids/pallets.

There are days miss having a fireplace. In an ideal setup I would have a free standing stove for heat, and a fireplace for when I'm in the mood for a fire but don't need heat. Awesome that your burning

Close to 40 years ago we put in an insert and cut our heating cost by 75% and some years even more. Did not take long to have the insert pay for itself.
