Temporary? Trampoline tarp cut to fit, with 1x2 to keep it in place. Wrap the ends in the 1x2 to keep it drom ripping or pulling. Works surprisingly well.

Edit: I see the project is done, good job.

After yesterday's 4-5" of snow, followed by graupel and rain, I can report this was a successful endeavor. I do have a couple of places to improve next year, but all-in-all, I am pleased with the results. Pictures taken at 8am

Inside of porch is nice and dry

Close up of places they snow sliding off the roof hit the plastic before falling to the ground

This is what the steps look like that don't have the plastic strips. The stuff coming off the roof falls on the railing and portions of it bounces back onto the steps. All of the steps are wet nearly all the way back to the house.

Next year there will be adjustments made to account for that railing. I was pretty sure that is what would happen and it still ticks me off that the construction crew did not follow my direction to pull the support (and thus the entire porch and stairs) back from the edge of the roof by 6" to prevent this from happening. On the other hand, I will not be shoveling 35' worth of ramp this winter, and I'll be able to snow blow that entire section from the bottom of the stairs to the end of the house. So it's still a huge improvement over the last 10 winters.

that is so great that it is working out for you. (Shudders and shivers) - snow already. We have not had a snowfall yet just some frosty mornings.

I did this to thanks to Canadian border VT nice setup! Enclosed half the deck that has the roof, less shoveling and no more storing the deck furniture and will retain heat from the gas fire pit. Win win

That's OK, I was mostly closed in (I think) when I saw you. I just needed to figure out a quick door system. What I came up with will serve its purpose and maybe next year I'll frame a door. The deck heaves but the porch roof doesn't so needed to put something together that would work between the two. I'll number everything before I take it down in the spring which will make easy set back up next fall.

Looks great and I'll bet it is nice and cozy in there when the fire is lit. Firewood doesn't get snow blown on it and not having to move the furniture is a time and back saver.

Good point on the heaving. With all new support posts and footings, I'll have to wait and see if mine does any settling/heaving.

The plastic strips have worked out great at keeping rain and snow off the porch as well as cutting the wind tremendously. During the day, the porch will be a bit warmer than the "outside". If it is sunny, it can be warmer by as much as 5*.

During the day the temp on the porch is a little warmer than the "outside". If it i sunny, then the difference can be by as much as 6*. And then during the night the temps even out.

I obviously didn't have enough caffeine yet and got interrupted by a cat butt before finishing, then forgot I'd already written some of it. I was trying to write that it can be as much as 5-6*.

But yesterday was a clear, sunny day (rare to see any sun, so this was a special treat. The back porch was 8* warmer.

Note that "Garden" is actually the north side of the house in the window sill of the garage. This unit only lets you choose names from a prepared list. And, in order to get future weather guesses, one of those picks has to either be "Garden" or "Outdoor" - I didn't have to press the choosing button thru as many names to get to Garden :D.

I bought this several weeks ago specifically to determine the differences. It replaced the previous station that only had 1 sensor that was on the back porch.

Getting huge gusts of wind right now. The plastic strips are working well at keeping the porch from being windblown. Granted, the back porch does not get as much wind as the front of the house, but when the whole house is shaking and the wind is howling, during previous winters the back porch was no fun to be on. Now I can stand out there just fine
