Thoughts on dentures or partials?

I hear they are very uncomfortable and a pita.

I need a lot of serious dental work, started with misaligned bite from braces in 83 so serious grinding at night for 30 years (roots on all 4 top front teeth are dead), fast forward to secondary Sjogrens (not enough saliva to protect them, and other obstacles... ).

I'm tired of root canals/and repaired root canals and replacing crowns that I grind through. Considering partials.

I read about glued "partials" but those who do it are too far away, so it will be a bridges. Except how does one replace two back molars on one side? I'm getting some taste back since Covid finally and I love to chew food and get all the textures and flavors.

I'm due for planing and scaling on one side of mouth in 2 weeks, not sure I can wait that long with the new toothache that came on tonight in one of the molars I just mentioned. I lost the filling several months ago, cracked off a part of that tooth-- scheduling here is 3-6 months out. I cracked a corner off my big front tooth a couple weeks ago biting off a piece of slice ham. I am SO over this crap. Could dentures or partials be a solution?

Implants an option? I have the grinding thing going on since I was a kid. My molars are worn badly and at times hurt like a sonofa. I’ve always thought the implants would be best.

Judy's teeth were terrible and she got dentures while still in her 20's. They were never a problem. She had them replaced once and I think she was in her 50's then. My parents both had dentures and I do not remember them ever complaining. My sister got dentures at age 16. Both brothers also got dentures. I am the only one who has not gone that route.

Judy talked me into trying partials once and the lowers were okay but I hated the uppers so only wore them for a short time. Eventually I stopped wearing the lowers too. I have lost several teeth but can still bite and chew. I have had very little work done on my teeth over the years. One crown and one broken tooth. Never a root canal. I can still eat.

What I get is that some folks seem to get along with false while others find them very uncomfortable. I even know a few who wear them only when eating!

Do some big time thinking before you jump. I might add that Judy got her second set in Mexico. It cost a couple hundred while in the States it is in the thousands. We had the Mexican set checked by my dentist and expected to hear they were cheap and would not last. Ha! Just the opposite happened. The dentist said that it was suspected to be cheap but found they were as good as any you can buy here. There is a reason why dentists are among the highest paid people!

I wear a mouth guard at night, made by my dentist, that stops the clenching and grinding. Way cheaper that ruining your teeth. But it sounds like you have other problems that have you considering the denture option that a bite guard alone won't fix.

Going to Mexico for dental work is not a bad idea at all.
My mom had a ton of work done there, the dentists there are very competent, and cost pennies on the dollar as opposed to the crooks in this country.
We just had a dentist look at my son's teeth.....says he needs a root canal, over 6k w/o insurance, so we did a bit of research on price south of the border, it's around $700 for the same work there.

All I have to say about the American medical establishment is.....:jaw::bug::hair::mad:

Implants are very expensive! The last time I priced it, something like $3k each tooth...and that has been a few years back, so I'm sure its went WAY up since then!
Wow, that sounds really high...I just had one earlier this year and I think it was under $2k (total)
My dad has them since he was a teen/early 20s, he seems to get along with them just fine, never heard a complaint.
I have had quite a bit of dental work done (and redone) in my life (guess I inherited my moms bad teeth...dad lost his due to a very VERY high fever when he was young) and I have a partial now...I get along with it just fine, but its also only 1 tooth.
Knowing what I know now, I often wonder if I shouldn't have just went with dentures years ago and be done with it...between the money my parents spent on my dental work, and what I have spent as an adult, it is literally a small fortune, and just not worth it IMO.

I’m sorry that you’re having all these issues, it looks like some big decisions for you and some large dental bills! I have no experience with the original question but wanted to join the discussion on dental costs. I’ve recently had to have a root canal and then the dentist wanted to put a crown on. Root canal $1500 crown $1300. That’s just under 3 grand to fix a d*** tooth! If I would have done a little more questioning prior I’d have just had the dang tooth pulled for $300

    Hay Now! lol

We have wild horses here, they are not shoe'd, they don't get their teeth floated, or vaccines or, or ... I've wondered about that since we moved here.

Yes, my Aunt says her boyfriend's dentures are downright painful and they have to drive across the state (Colorado traffic is really bad) to get them adjusted. The website of the dentist I see says they do dentures, I'll call tomorrow to be sure. I can't get myself back and forth to Cheyenne. ( I can get there just fine but fatigue scares me on the way home, I used to drive for a living and I cannot concentrate like I did all those years when fatigued). A couple other dentists here list them too but I have a feeling it's a blanket description on the site I was on for all dentists. Idk, they send molds out for my crowns, maybe that do that with dentures too? Hopefully someone here does dentures, traveling is a big factor.

Thank you for the suggestions on Mexico, traveling is not an option for me.

Did you have braces that pulled all your top teeth back into your skull too? I literally have to hold my bottom jaw backwards since 1983/4. Implants spook me, I can hear the drill thinking about it :hair:

Thank you, I did try a dental guard, my dentist required a sleep study to get one for me, gave me an order for the hospital for a home sleep test and made it incredibly difficult. Only check out at at 7:30 am, can only check in at 3 pm. Umm, I had to get my child to and from school at those times 20 miles out of town. Shanghai'd my husband twice, first time they lost the results, second time they it didn't record properly (you have to tape the sticky things on all over, and I used like a roll of tape). I gave up. Fast forward, my dentist got a ring at home sleep test though my dentist ~a month ago, she said she'd call if it was weird, no call.

Meanwhile she told me to get heat and shrink mouth gaurd at the pharmacy, I can't close my mouth with them or even only one of them on which is bad for those without enough saliva. What a mess huh!

Thank you, I know you have experienced some of the issues I have. I had bottle rot as a baby, had all silver capped baby teeth till adult teeth came in, I wonder if that affected my adult teeth in a different way like your father? Regarding money, I wonder about all the $$ spent so far too! My fantasy wish would be to have dentures and go to dentist once per year for checkup and be done.

Start with partials, upper front and lower molars I mentioned, and go from there?

I got full dentures about 5-6 years ago. Do not do the teeth in a day thing. Do not fall for the cheap implant scams. It takes time and trips. I had all my teeth pulled one day and temp dentures given to me then, that were used almost like a pressure bandage as the swelling came up for several days. Then I think it was 3 or 4 trips after the swelling was completely down to do the permanent mold, then fitting, then adjustments. As far as adjustments, you decide when it’s good to go, the dentist works for you and doesn’t get to make that call. If you don’t like it have them fix it. Some adjustments took a few days to be sure it was or was not right. It’s a major pain but take the time to do it to save the hassle later. My dentures don’t hurt and are not uncomfortable, I just don’t like having them in, so when I’m home I generally don’t wear them. I kick myself now for waiting as long as I did and going through all the treatments that just postponed the inevitable.

Don’t have dentures but also a grinder and terrible clenched..

Had 2 crowns and root canals on molars, wife, also my hygienist told doctor to due them in gold as it’s softer and doesn’t break teeth around them

My grandpa only wore his dentures when gramdma made him (when company was over or they were out in public). He never wore them when eating - and he was not hampered by that. Of course this was way back in the 70's and 80's.

I had a friend who had horrible teeth/jaw issues. She finally had the rest of her teeth removed and went to dentures. She loved them and wished she had done that sooner. That was back in the mid to late 90's.

The ex got a partial upper in the early 2000's that were 3-4 teeth. He wore them a couple of times and quit for whatever reason.

My mother recently had an implant done becuase that tooth could no longer take a crown. She hates it - well, actually the implant didn't really "take" well (she had to have it done twice if I recall). But, she is in her late 80's, so it's probably just an age thing of her jaw bone.

So, if I were to guess, I'd say the biggest issue is if you have skilled fitters in your area, and maybe how willing all parties are to make adjustments until right (if needed).
