A tree service company I recently used surprised me and dropped off a load of logs. Looks like a pile of maple but I haven’t a clue what kind. What do you think?
I'm prob the least qualified Tree I.D. guy on here but I think Sugar Maple. The good stuff! I get Red and Sugar mixed up when looking at it like this...
When you see the sunburst pattern of darker colored wood when looking at the end grain, it’s red maple.
Doesnt that exist on silver maple sometimes? IIRC i have seen that in silver as well. I dont score a lot of silver and most being yard trees.
Appreciate the feedback so far. Some google-fu using the info in the responses leads me to believe it’s red maple as well. Not sugar maple btu territory but much better than silver. I’m 3+ years ahead with my wood which consists of 90% or more red/white oak. This wood seasons in 12 months which throws a monkey wrench in where to stack it. Cut, split and stacked I’m hoping this red maple doesn’t get punky before I get to burn it. thanks for the replies.
red maple usually stores fairly well as long as you get it split. I have mostly swampland to cut on and swamp maple/red maple is the bulk of what I burn here for hardwood. I do get some oak on higher ground but tend to reserve it for the depths of Winter.
I know when silver starts to rot, the center will get darker but I can’t ever remember seeing a sunburst pattern like in red. I haven’t cut a heck of a lot of silver maple though.
Definitely mulberry. Just kidding, it just seems like someone always suggests mulberry. In the PNW we have as much mulberry as we have good pizza. Will probably never see it.
Sometimes you get a dark heartwood with Norway from decay from past wounds etc. I dont score it much even though its great firewood. Common as a yard tree and on property boundaries where sapling sprout and go unchecked for years.
Get it split, stacked and top covered and it keeps well. If you don't do this it will not keep very long. If you want some super kindling wood, split this and it is sweet. Lights quick, burns hot and will even leave coals.
Cottonwood? The bark was pretty course all the way to the top... Smells kinda like hay....not poopy at all...
Got all the maple logs cut today. What a different experience cutting maple versus oak. I’d say it took half the time. Will split and stack it off to the side this week. Can’t find it in me to stack it in with the oak, cherry and ash I recently scored. That will be burned in the winter of 25/26.
