Has anyone seen (or even better, used) one of these jigs to do square grind on their chain grinder? I’m a novice when it comes to square filing and it’s been proven to me time and time again that whenever I invest the time to do it, I rock my chain pretty hard after the fact I much prefer the performance of a square ground chain to round, so this seems like a good solution. I can’t justify buying one of these jigs, but being a toolmaker by trade I can make one. I already made the 45 degree angle piece. Before I make the rest of the components I’m looking for opinions. The chain I rocked yesterday needed a ton of work, and it was already worked pretty well from converting it to square file from round. I ended up going buck wild with a Dremel to clear out the gullets. By the time I got the carnage on the top plates to disappear, they were considerably shorter. I figure this could be a good chain to experiment with.
If you would want a chain ground on my Simington to have, just say the word and I’ll get you one. That might ease the curve getting your wheel profiled.

Dude on AS was building it and looking for feedback a year ago. Seemed honest and open to ideas/perspectives. A couple guys on our fb sharpening group use them. Limited angle adjustments and manual wheel dressing, but it’ll make a square chain with a round grinder with some practice
Thanks for the input. I think once the wheel geometry is dialed in, the way to go would to be turn a wheel in the lathe and send it out for borazon coating. Either that or make some kind of norbide stick wedge-shaped dressing contraption for standard grinding wheels.
Merry Christmas to me Seeing it firsthand I’m glad I didn’t spend too much time trying to reverse engineer it from internet pictures. There’s an added angle (about 5 degrees) that I would’ve completely missed had I continued on. I’ll give an update once I get into it and become successful at grinding square chain.
I was going to ask you about this a couple days ago. The YT vid showed up on my suggested the other day and remembered you were talking about building one. Keep us posted.
