Where would it be? I've got long-term goals where I'd like to go in another decade or so, but I'd like to hear other people's aspirations. Somewhere further out in the country, or maybe the dream is to retire in suburbia where everything is close and you can pay the neighbor's kid to shovel your driveway? A nomadic existence? Maybe another country entirely? Or maybe you're already living the dream... Where is the perfect place for you?

Hmm. Tough one for me. Of all the places I’ve been, I think it would be the Smokey Mountains. I’d have to visit the PNW before I made a final decision though. Visited California and it was absolutely stunning but couldn’t live there.

SE Alaska. Right now, life says, no.

Everything on the west coast is California or California wannabe. Beautiful but holy hell.

X2...I do not have wanderlust...lots of cool places to visit in the world, but after a week or two, I'm always ready to go back to NEO

Any place can be made better (or worse) by the neighbors involved.

Did that 42 years ago. Now as I get older and less able, I am perfectly content with where I am and how things turned out. My only suggestion to any one contemplating a move is do it as soon as you are able. The longer you wait, the harder it is. If I was younger and healthier I would move farther into the hinterland simply because I cherish the peace, quiet and don't miss the stupidity that is becoming more common place in everyday living.

A small place out in the sticks where the only sounds i hear are nature...and chain saws!

I honestly cant see myself retired and if so making firewood would be my "job".

If I had to absolutely choose, somewhere with a touch of the 4 seasons still, I do not yet want to give that up, perhaps one day when my bones are old a brittle I'll seek warmer climates.

Nowhere with heavy winters full of snow for 5-6 months, although I do love the N.Country and all it offers.

Somewhere surrounded by the woods, mountains around me, peaceful and quiet with land.

We traveled around, explored, and picked NE Iowa. Scenic, not too crowded, not expensive, four seasons, and is in the middle. We camp a lot and go both East and West by the same amount. East coast has a tough time going all the way West and West coast has a tough time going all the way East. We do not like crowds and NEVER snowbird but enjoy heating with wood and hiking in the snow (LOVE soft polyester base layers). We picked real winters (I own five pairs of tire chains and know how to use them). No regrets. Know what you want and look for that place...

Wing plow smoothed out the snow over ditch on the inside of a curve (gravel road) and I ended up buried in snow over the hood. Shoveled out the two front tires and chained. Hit the gas in reverse and the snow pile exploded, scared me and then it was fun...

I'm OK where I am at. If I had to go somewhere else in the US, it would be somewhere with low population density. If I can choose anywhere, a small and rural Village in Japan.

I could go for that... but I'd have to be way up high in the Appalachians.

On the Mad River in Vermont. I would want property well above the river so flooding wasn't a concern.
