Tried out the reworked log arch today. Nice day for it, cool and crisp. couple oaks for the maiden voyage A single to be nice to it And four tulips to finish it off. I thought they were Ash until cut into em LOL
Looks like the arch lived up to you expectations. Was that the tulip you told me about? Tulip has fooled me into thinking it was ash. Tulip will usually have a whir-tish fubgus in the bark crevices. Youre not kidding about cool. It was actually cold this morning. few of my fingers went numb. House im working on is in an open area and the gentle breeze wasnt pleasant. I actually went digging through the PU for a ski cap and no such luck. I was later digging to pour concrete and that warmed me up.
Yeah I got two Tulip logs home before the arch needed repair. These four more are the last. Everything above that seems too punky to bother with. Couple more oak logs down there then I’ll hav to think about dropping a few standing dead. I’ll have to debate that in my mind Tomorrow I’m heading down the road to pull a few dead oaks out of the woods. Good deal. The guy buys five cord of wood and gives me his dead trees for free LOL. He’ll be buying them back next year I wore gloves today. still no socks but gloves.
Tulip poplar and ash can look very similar bark wise except that poplar bark has a lot of "strings" as it's falling off the log. Ash bar just rolls off more neatly.
I certainly noticed the strings. Nasty stuff. Been a long time since I processed any tulip where the bark was loose.
The resurrected log arch looks great Joe. What's this tulip scrounging business you're tangled up in now? Already skidded every dead oak out of 50 acres plus the state forest?
Thought they were ash. Makes good filler wood anyway. Still plenty of oak to grab around here tho. Strangest thing this spring I started on the far side of the property felling dead red oaks. Thickest punk pulp wood I ever saw. A little discouraging really. Never noticed that thick of pulp anywhere else on the property. Did grab one off the other side of the road the utilities took down. Noticed it there first. It’s like that one area has extra thick pulp/punk. I’m moving on to better areas Don’t tell me there’s one of those small silver plaques in one of my photos. Property lines around here are just a suggestion
That's the problem I'm having in Middletown too. I have to do test cuts now before bucking entire downed trees. If the outer punk goes too deep, I'm not clowning around with it. Too much effort for this snob Finding dead ones that shed their bark is like a gold mine though.
well I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s noticed such a thing. Thought I was going whacko,,,,,more than usual. With the new Grizzly bars and box wedge it’ll be interesting to see the difference. Without The bars there was just too much mess Getting dumped in the wood pile.
Helped a customer/friend clean out his woods. Bout a half mile down the road. No truck and trailer accessibility so the arch gets the job. A few pics from this morning.
