    Stove Top Adapter...
    - With damper
    - Or No damper?

My previous stove (Jotul 500) did not have a damper, and I thought it worked just great. I save $20 if go without, but I recall some people on here really standing behind getting a damper... this is going on an old Vermont Castings Intrepid that I restored and am putting in my dining room.

I've been glad more than once that I installed one.

In the stove pipe? I've never even seen one. I wonder if the code is different around here? When would you use it?

I use mine when the wind and atmospheric conditions are such that the fire runs away. Temperatures just keep climbing even with the draft closed. It doesn't happen often but when it does the damper helps.

Not sure what the code is here there are no inspections. Been around wood stoves for as long as I can remember. I don’t recall ever seen a stove without s pipe damper.

I look at it like a fire extinguisher, you might not need it but it isnt expensive and if you do need it you need it now and you’ll be glad you had it.

    Yes, install the damper!

I even put one in my fish shack for the small wood stove that has a 3" flue.

Yes "Damper" , worst case don't use it just leave it open.
You would hate to want or need one and not have it there , you know how that goes.
Now or maybe later , I pick now to be safe. The aggravation of having to do it later is worth the cost any day.

Yep. If nothing else it should allow you to get longer burn times. If you put it in and don't 'need' it, it can sit there harmlessly in the open position. The older stoves don't usually have much restriction on chimney flow like all the new EPA stuff does and are more prone IMO to get rowdy than the newer ones.

Perfect timing with this thread as I just decided today that I need a stove damper! My draw isn't too too excessive, just enough for me to decide I want to tame it down a little.

Problem is that my piping is hard to access.... it's out the back of the stove and up a masonry chimney. Very little room to work.

However, I have plenty of space to install one on the intake side. (My stove's plumbed with an outside air kit, and the hose for that is super accessible.)

No reason I can't put a little damper on the intake side, right?

What stove is it? Some stoves have air sources outside of the OAK, so throttling the OAK would not have the desired affect in that scenario...not sure about a stove that gets 100% from the OAK...

Yah, sorry about that, guess I should get that in my signature....

It's a Hearthstone Heritage. I've heard that some air is pulled in from a different source than just the OAK, but the diagrams aren't clear. Regardless, I don't need to reduce it very much

I was playing around with it today and covered about 3/4 of the opening and was able to noticeably dampen the burn.

Without a damper I'd never have enough wood. The Wife's from Texas and it's always 80deg. there.....

Wow! Overwhelming yes vote for the Damper! I ordered it on Wednesday morning. Glad I did. Someone said it, and it's true, do it now so you don't have to do it later. Thanks!
