Ms. buZZsaw rescued two orange tabby kittens years back. Her kids named them Meat & Taters. We still have Taters 15 years later. He's seen in some of my posts.
Way before my dad decided to leave this earth 4 years ago, he used to say our rescue pup Harvey should be renamed “Emergency Meat.”
First, we took the same approach with our rescue dog. He was named “Dwin”, and my son was into mythology at the time so we renamed him Odin. Onyx is almost as bad as Dwin. I like Sandhillbilly ’s thoughts—what name do you like to say a lot and loudly. For an O name I like Ozzie. But the best ever name for a dog? Bingo. Name your beautiful pup Bingo. Starting today. I wish I had convinced my kids to use that name.
Ours are " Cash " We figured cash is king. Not to mention the vet bills =$ and " Zonk " got lucky on that one. As far as knowing he is a Lab , well he is a dud ; but full of love and a 65 pound lap dog. They both get called a lot of different names and they don't seem to care.
Years back my ex and i had a friendly "stray" cat hanging around. He would lay on the deck chilling out. One day we opened the door and he came in, made a lap around the family room, jumped on the couch and went to sleep. "who do you think you are, Donald Trump and you own the place"! Well the name stuck and he became Donny and would occasionally disappear for a week and we assumed he went back to his former owners. This was 2000 IIRC. Coolest laid back cat too. Years later when i moved here he adopted our landlord and only came home to eat. He would unrelentlessly scratch the back door to go out until you opened it.
I haven't read through all this thread.... I did read that this is a rescue dog that has had the name for a while. We got a rotti from the pound last year. They had named her Sadie. We were fine with the name. However, if she had a name before the pound, I'm pretty sure it wasn't Sadie. It took her a loooonnng time to respond to Sadie when we called her. I would recommend getting the dog and see how it responds to Onyx. I'd much rather have a dog that responds to a name (even if I wasn't real excited about that particular name), vs having a great name picked out and the dog acts like nothing is happening. Especially since I think you said the dog has had that name for a while. After a bit, you might could try working in a similar name or nickname if you wanted and gauge the response.
Joe, i do like Oscar. Seeing the picture of him the names of Zeke and Doogan pop into my head. I can hear you calling him doggie Doogan or Doogan doggie!
I googled Dwin a while back to figure it out, and all I got was a random DJ in Belgium. Bizarre name. I know what onyx is, I’m dumb but I’m not that dumb. It’s not a great name IMO because it’s not an easy name to say if you’re going to say it a lot or out loud for 10+ years. Both names are bad for different reasons.
My last dog's name was Prince Jordan of Jacksonville Beach. Really. That's what she named him and was on his papers. Jordan for practicality. I called him dog and he knew rather to run towards or away and hide just by the tone of my voice.
