Here’s the deal. Thinking I’ll snatch up another rescue dog. Problem is his name is Onyx. I can’t bear the idea of calling a dog Onyx.
So I’m looking to you people to help me find a new name. I’d like to keep it sounding similar so the dog just thinks I’m a dumb human and not confuse him too much. Coming up empty. Closest I’ve got is Oscar. Better than Onyx but still,,,,,,
Can you guys do better than Oscar?

What breed is it. Maybe there is a name that fits the breed or personality?
Maybe depending on his/her build there might be something hidden there as well.

What's wrong with Onyx if its a black dog? Is it a name the rescue gave him? If so it's probably only had the name a short time. Changing to whatever you want shouldn't be a problem.
Last rescue I got the rescue had him two weeks called him robbie. We changed it to Loki and he was 3 when we got him. I think the name change was minor compared to the new home

My dog is named Ezekiel but we call him Zeke. How about Onnie. I think having a home is what he or she wants and will settle for anything you call him.

I think both of these reply's are spot on.
Both of ours get called just about everything under the sun ,
They don't seem to mind one bit.
It's all about the love you give them and in return you get it back from them.

Only pic I have at the moment. He’s mostly white. He’s had the name 4 years. Some “experts” claim a rescue with an established name should be kept the same as everything else in their life is changing. One constant.
Perhaps I’m overthinking it. I agree I’ve had nicknames for some of my dogs. Maggot and Jackazz being top of the list. They come to pretty much anything if they’re willing to come at all LOL

some weird picks in that list Mike. Some of those would turn heads :)

Our recent rehoming brought us Deverger's August who is three years old. Previous owner called him August. Neither one worked well for training purposes so now we have "Augie" or "Augie Doggy" which took about 1 day to take hold.

We named our last dog because of her unusually long eyelashes, Lacey. We had a cat that ran and jumped all the time, not a lot of walking, he was Zippy.

Every dog I've ever had, I had at least 4-5 names for and they'd answer to all of them. Was it fair to the dog? I dunno, but they understood just fine :) That dog doesn't look like an Onyx to me. Maybe Oliver if you're sticking with the phonetics game. I've got nothing really. Do you want to go with another name from Norse mythology?
