I got shorted today.... I had a guy call me for custom cut 14" length firewood. He asked me to call him on October 1, I had it all cut for him ahead of time and dry. Called him and he wasn't ready so I sold it. Few weeks go by, calls and says he's ready. I explained it's $340 delivered. He wants it moved around the house to the backyard which I estimated it'd be $50 extra for a cord. I call him today to let him know I'm heading over and I'll be there at the exact time. With his help, we wheelbarrow everything around his house and stack it in the back. After it's all stacked and I'm loading up, he pulls out his wallet, counts $300, a $20 and then hands me a handful of cash (kind of mumbles that it should cover it). It seems short but trying not to be rude, I don't count. Get into the truck and it's $330 instead of $390. I should have packed up when he was talking about owning a used car sale lot LOL. Tempted to call the guy but at the end of the day, definitely won't be going back.
Call him immediately. If he was too lazy to move a single cord to the back yard, pretty sure he won't beat you up. Counting money isn't rude, just good business.
Well if you know you ain't going back.... the least you can do is call him and give him a peice of your mind. Personally I'd be knocking on his front door looking for the rest.
Sounds like the man clearly has financial problems. Being that it's firewood to keep the guy warm, I'd probably take the same course of action. This is his one get out of jail free card, steer clear next time.
I had a lady come help me at my previous home. I paid her and she left. She got like 15 minutes away, turned around and came back. I had misunderstood the price she charged. I felt terrible and immediately paid her what I was short.
Wood stays on the truck until cash is in hand is my new method. First time I've run into this. I decided to finally call him and no answer, mailbox is full.
Good on you for being honest. Good on her for standing up for herself. Not enough honest folk anymore. There are some, they are just a bit more rare than they use to be.
That's what it seems for sure. Glad most people here are honest but still our fair share of people trying to get something for nothing.
We all learn lessons. This one cost you $60 and some frustration. Not too expensive. I’ve had some simple lessons cost me a lot more than that. I’ll add that when I buy something in cash, I always count twice (usually in advance) and ask them to please count it when I hand it to them.
It takes one person to change the methods going forward. Unfortunate lesson. If he wasn't 72, I'd be picking up some of my wood.
Don't know the feller or his situation but 72year old people can be crooks too. If he didn't have the money or didn't like the price he should have said that up front. Figure you're like most of us, if he told you he was a little short you would have worked something out.
I have always done this. Not selling wood ; I don't do that. But other transactions dealing with cash gets counted on the spot before we part ways.
I usually count the money, but rarely on a bundle delivery. Recently i did before i walked out and it was short $20. I showed the cashier. She apologized and handed me the $20 bill. Dont know if it was done on purpose. In your case id call him back. You went a couple extra miles bucking the wood custom length and moving it to the back. I could see knocking off a couple of bucks since he helped, but if that was the agreed price he should pay in full whether he helped or not. The guy sounds like a greedy scumbag who would screw his own family.
