November 1, 1957, 66 years ago today, was a monumental day in Michigan history, although bittersweet for some as well. It's the day the Mackinac Bridge opened after many decades of dreaming, planning, and finally building. I remember it well and also remember crossing on the ferry boats. I also remember one summer seeing some of the work and also remember a float where they made a miniature of what the bridge would look like. In addition I remember some of the building of I-75 and US-27, which is now called US-127.
Brother-in-law had the opportunity to go to the top of one of the towers! He couldn't stop talking about it. I bet you would have enjoyed that.
we will be crossing it later in the month to go to the hunting cabin in the UP. My Uncle remembers before the bridge was built. They would wait three days to get a ferry to get to the UP to hunt. Said the bars were pretty full...
My first job after graduation was located in Birmingham, MI. I decided to see the U-P one weekend. Largest bridge I've crossed so far. The U-P of Michigan is beautiful for sure.
I've only crossed it in my truck in 2019, and that was my wife's only time over it. As a kid we went over Mac in one of the old land yacht Thunderbirds of the mid 70's, but I don't remember that at all. Going over the Mac on a motorcycle has to be quite an experience. Our Labrador, Hayden's mom Mac, is named after the bridge. It makes sense considering that the breeder lives in the UP, fairly close to the Mackinac Bridge.
