Not even messing with the shoulder season wood, huh? Then again you're in red oak everywhere country.
37 for a low this morning. I have been burning almost every day for the past couple weeks. I have a mix of ash, maple, elm and some punky stuff I couldn't force myself to not burn. Why not, it is basically free. I did have to get a new fan last week, and went with a 20 inch box fan with a 20x20 inch air filter bungeed to the back of it. I think it moves alot more air than the round fan I had previously. The wife actually said it was too warm yesterday, and I didn't put any wood in the stove for about 6 hours.
I had an assortment of junk/punk/campfire/ ugly’s but it only lasted 3 days. I own 40 acres of hardwoods and realize after burning every type of wood Southern Wisconsin has to offer, it is hard to beat oak. If that makes me a wood snob so be it!
Mix of boxelder and cherry on the menu last evening and this morning. Getting to be the time of year when we'll have 2 fires a day.
How do you like catalpa? Catalpa is my favorite non food producing tree. I got a few on my property that will need to come down in next few years
I slept in till 0815 this am, it's 26* now, so I don't know how low it went. The Pellet stove has the duty today for a short while. Today I need to haul the wood box down to the front porch and fill it up. So tonight or tomorrow will be the first wood fire of the season.
Upper 30's outside this morning. Had the first fire of the season yesterday- only 1 load but got it up to 74 by the time I went to bed. Got up a little early this morning to get it back up and going before work. Every year I feel like I have a bit of a learning curve to overcome and get back into the swing of things. 68 on the house dial when I left.
It dries quickly, but it's low BTU, straight coal at all, and even though it's bone dry, it still wants to smolder a bit. It will light up when you mix it with other kinds of wood. But if you try an all catalpa fire, it's kinda crappy. This was tree service freebies delivered in log form. It had a unique smell to it as well. Like moldy leather. I'm burning it just because.
29 this morning high of 47. First cold snap will last four days. The fifth day we will be back in the 70’s. Usual you just have to wait 20 minutes around here for the weather to change. Do like the chance of running the wood for a few day. Oak,ash, elm keeping the house at 75.
Mice. I've caught 7 in the last few days, peanut butter as bait, snap traps. checking and emptying the trap-line twice a day. I appreciate the mice's final sacrifice to the betterment of the house in the incinerator. It's their gratitude for the peanut butter.... I thought of making little finger puppets, but I just don't have the time. I wonder if those little knitted (knat?) toys were replicas of something a little darker before knitting was a thing? otherwise oak and maple.
Around 3" or more of extra snow today. It must be extra because I'm not planning on saving it at all.
40/73, got the evening load going. Cherry, silver maple and a piece of hickory. Down in the 20's again overnight with a few snow showers called for.
