I have been working on a small table for our kitchen from some ash that I milled. Original plan was to do oak but wasn't sure I had enough so went to plan "B". This has been a year in the works and finally can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The dreaded task of polyurethane is all that is left. I was checking the date on the last project I did and it was from October 2022 so it looks like I am on the one a year plan , sort of like the 3 year plan. Sorry the pictures aren't the best and don't mind the mess in the background, woodworking space is kind of limited. Hope to find a little more room as winter gets closer and more inside projects to be done.
First coat of clear on this afternoon. Tomorrow morning, I’ll flip it and do the top of the top. Dry a couple of days sand and hit it again
Very nice! From log to finished product. I need to get my arse in gear and build something. Plenty of milled stuff hanging around here.
Yes it is a good feeling , Still more at the house that we need to mill for you. You better get to work.
Looks great man! One thing to be careful on tops like that is glueing wood cross grain underneath. The ones going with the grain are perfectly fine, but across the grain, it can make the top split over time. Wood grows width wise. Beautiful Ash, hard to find logs/lumber for our furniture business nowadays. Most of it is milled and sold with no more Ash supply.
Thanks for the tip. This whole wood thing is new to me. But trying and always appreciate someone’s input. Good or bad. Normal for me is metal not wood.
Did you mix a little bit of stain in with the polyurethane? I really like how that turned out. A nice finish that brings out the grain.
Minwax stain and 3 coats of semi gloss polyurethane on everything and 4 on top. As is straight from their tap.
I haven't done any nice stuff like that in a long time. I got a LPHV sprayer for the urethane. Goes on nice with no bubble or brush marks. But you end up wasting a little and have to clean up after spraying. Minwax was always my favorite and seemed easier to use than other brands, but maybe that's just me...
I have had no issues with Minwax. I did brush it on with a good natural bristle brush , there might be a few bubbles and brush strokes when first applied but after a couple minutes they disappear. When dry there are no bubbles and the brush strokes are gone completely. Maybe there are others available that are better but my luck so far with their product has been good.
