Woodwidow's mother heats her house with wood. She has electric base boards in four rooms but not enough capacity in the panel to heat the other three bedrooms. How big of a breaker does a Heat Pump require?
Depends. I just added a minisplit heat pump that heats my whole 1700sf house from 1963. It’s a 24k btu model and it needed a 25 amp breaker, 240 volts. If you want a ducted central heat pump then you’re looking at two breakers. One for the outdoor unit and one for the inside unit. Maybe even another if you choose backup resistance strip heaters. Like your example, I actually repurposed a slot in my panel that had serviced a 240 volt wall heater. We now have a mixture of heat pump, wall heaters, and the woodstove.
I have a 3 ton unit. Can't remember what size the outside breaker is, but the inside breaker is a 30amp.
