Refinishing some old ( antique ? ) saws

Did you just use steel wool and oil to clean it up? And what did you do with the wood before the wax??

It looks like I might have a little work to do soon.

 

Well I tried.
Problem was he went to the store we were going to meet at but in a different town and my lunch hour was used up so out of time today.
Not my fault but things happen.
Going to meet him before work tomorrow morning.

 

So you went from restoring an old chain saw to a hand saw? Neat piece of history.

We gonna try it the next time we go cutting?

 

Here’s what I did. In hindsight I might have used wet/dry sandpaper with a sanding block on the saw blade. I gleaned all of this from multiple sources online. This one was one of the best:

Take it all apart of course. You might want to note what goes where—when I reassembled I found that the indentations on the handles formed over time to specific “interchangeable” metal parts. It was kinda fun to find the right spots where they each fit perfectly.

Handles—cleaned with a mixture of equal parts mineral spirits, BLO and vinegar using 0000 steel wool. Dried with paper towels. Then waxed three times with (Birchwood Casey) gun stock wax and rag.

Metal parts: Cleaned with WD-40 and scotch brite pads (but wire brush works well too I think).. Then (Flitz) metal polish and scotch brite pads.

Saw blade: Simple Green and scotch brite pads. Then two coats gun stock wax and rags.

One of the most interesting steps is finding the etching. Mine is practically gone, but if there was more of it then I would’ve used gun blue to bring it back out. If you care about finding the etching, you want to be very gentle with sandpaper or anything more harsh. There’s a lot online and on YouTube about it. I found it really interesting, but others might not care.

That looks like a great saw for $30! I admit I was looking last night for another saw to restore.

Very interesting information here , looks like mine is a crosscut with champion style teeth and Pacific Coast handles.
Sounds like a common saw here in the Northeast for hardwood , it does sound like it is longer than most.

I would clean them up, find someone to sharpen them and put ‘‘em up in the rafters of the shop. With the price of gas and war on fossil fuels, you may need them to cut your wood sooner than you think.

 

I will pick this over the weekend. Kind of cool and the price is right.

Nope , I have it.

 

From today, not a bad find.
$20 for the bow saw and $5 for the blade.
Blade will be going to the waterjet to have the sawmill name and logo cut.

Not a bad day.
And he is close, has a cherry tree with no top from a storm and standing easy drop and load for the mill. Plus, a ton of other old stuff, I might be interested, and he says he will keep me in mind for anything he comes across saw related.
