Dumb question…fire before chimney sweep?

At the farm this weekend and it’s pretty nippy outside. I’d like to get a fire going today and tomorrow…but having the chimney sweep on Monday. Is that an issue?

 

Being aware that you need a sweep is an indicator that you will likely burn responsibly. The sweep does allow for making sure that there are no obstructions (nests, dead coon or a sheet of creosote that has fallen from the side walls but no to the fireplace), which is probably a greater issue than the creosote on your chiney walls.

But yeah...try to get after it before weeks or months long fires become the norm.

 

Go for it. Start a small fire with paper to verify no obstructions. Then let her rip!!

 

I'd probably build a very small fire with some very small kinlin (something that will burn hot n fast) just to warm the flue and make sure that the flue is not plugged up...this before letting 'er rip with a big fire...that way if something is not right, its easy to snuff the fire and not have a bunch of smoke rolling out of the stove for the next hour

 

I had morning fires up until 2 days before getting the chimney swept. As long as it was cold, he had no problems.

 

Maybe I misunderstood the question?
Is it ok to get things hot before he comes?
I'd say as long as your last fire is 24 hrs or so before the cleaning, it should be fine.

 

I pretty much have to remove a pipe to clean mine so fire needs to be totally out, as in no hot coals, although I suppose I could cap the stove for a bit. Or remove the coals could be a plan B. or just make believe they're not there could be plan C. Temporarily.
Course, it's Monday so it's probably too late for options.

 

Don't forget, there is always July or August

 

Ya I know…I contacted the guy late August. He was pretty booked…also semi-retired. Maybe I should learn before he fully retires!
