Colder here. What's your temp? What ya burnin?

I took the week off to get some alone time in the wood yard.
Supposed to drop into the 30’s tonight.

 

44F lower 30s at night. Cherry, Ash, Oak mix. House has been a little warmer than I want it to be, so I open the windows and heat the outside a little too.

 

Yup nothing wrong with that! We have an insulated but unheated attached garage so whenever we are burning and get a little warm in the house we open the doors to the garage. I would never do that if the furnace was running of course. We are sitting at 4c/37f on a rainy morning. Its looking like today will be the warmest day of the week. I did lots of yard work yesterday with our son. Bucked up a little apple tree, planted the garlic and cleaned the gutters amongst other things. Today Ill stake the raspberries so the incoming snow doesn't snap them. Of course there will be a fire to chase the damp away.

 

Here are a few pics from my side deck showing the creep of the snow line as it descends. It will be neat to see how much the coming snow knocks off the larch needles. They've been yellow for awhile now. The back of the draw is almost completely burnt from a forest fire that came to the edge of town this August. The erosion up there is pretty interesting when it rains.

 

Man your part of the continent is beautiful. Our best ski trip ever was to Big White and our favorite rock climbing spot is just east of Penticton (back when we did that sort of thing). I don’t know if either place is technically in the Kootenays but if not they’re on the border.

In 30 years when Baron Trump is president and the US invades Canada, I hope my kids settle up there and take me with them.

 

Lol. Good to hear you have fond memories of your adventures out this way. BC is nice, I'm in the far eastern part of the province. I see you are in Seattle. Its nice there as well. Its about a 5 hour drive to Spokane from my area so I visit there from time to time. I didnt do much rock unless it was mixed rock and ice on an alpine route My biggest alpine route was on the north face of Rainier. I also did lots of ice climbing when I was younger both out here in the Rockies and when I lived in Whistler back in the day. Now my ice screws are put to good use holding down my ice fishing tent!

Same deal, but I cant open the door to the garage right now because I have a kitten out there that decided to adopt us last week. Lol.

We live out in the sticks, and I opened the garage last week to this little thing. She has a litter box, bed, and food out there now. Figuring out what's next. Our dog despises cats, but hes getting older and has mellowed out. Been doing some soul searching on this one.

We have too many owls and hawks out here. She wouldnt make it. Also not going to let her go to the shelter.

 

Started a fire this morning. Now I have the windows open. Oops.

 

Sunny days are starting to make me think I might hit November before my first fire.

Tomorrow night we might run the heat pump a bit but by just being judicious with the curtains we've been keeping the house in the upper 60s.

 

First fire of the season! Doug Fir chunks and bark. The owls are moving through and long, high, skeins of geese are heading south. The prevailing wind is coming from the north and the first freezing and near freezing temps are forecast for the end of the week. I get my right hand carpal tunnel surgery on Tuesday so I brought a wheelbarrow of splits into the garage today and split a couple weeks kindling. The Wif has been using the electric furnace too much so then I thought "what the heck" I may as well fire the stove up and burn the dust off and use up some bark, chunks and uglies! Have a couple of windows partially open upstairs to temper the heat. Guess we're off and running for the burning season!

First burn in A few days lows to 34. Ash silver maple pine

 

41/68 load of silver maple and cherry in the fireview. Low for tonight is 31.

 

35/75 got some small cherry and elm splits going.

 

You understand how this works, don't you? She chose you and your warm home is now her home. All you can do is love her with all your heart.
