I think the rust issues are in the past models, but I'm still concerned about the underbody. With all the salt in the winter and living on a dirt road that gets insta rust applied every year I'm going to try something.

2 days ago I ordered the professional fluid film kit, it includes a gallon of product.

The whole car is run by a 13inch touch screen, even the heated seats and climate control. The car will also drive itself, but only in lane as it won't steer out to pass.

Years ago a friend had a kia that was 9 years old when the frame rusted out. Back of the car separated itself.

At least there is an actual volume knob for the radio. Reports are now saying that the lack of physical buttons and switches is causing increase in distracted driving, cant use muscle memory to reach for things now, you have to take your eyes off the road.

Yes it can be distracting, maybe that's why the car can drive it's self? There's also steering wheel controls for some stuff and many things like heated seats and climate can be controlled with voice commands.

Fluid film or similar does wonders.

My ex had a basic 2001 Tacoma that was under recall for the frame. The frame looked fine and always passed inspection. The dealer he took it to check for recall to put a screwdriver (or something hard and pointy) against a specific place then hammered it until it broke thru. That dealership made a living for years replacing frames - they rarely had one come in that they couldn't somehow get a hole into one way or another. They had huge piles of frames that you could see from the highway, just ready to go. He got a new frame and it was waranteed for 15 years (from the original buy date). It was still good when he traded it in in 2014 or 2015 at a local dealership. That truck was a beast, regularly hauled tons of wood (dirt, stone etc) and went anywhere into the woods to get those materials. I would not hesitate to buy another one should I decide to get a truck (and be able to afford it)

The Subaru we had didn't have a recall (this was mid 90's), so we just ate the price of the car (thank goodness we bought used, but still only got to drive it for 2 years and then had to junk it). Oh, and looking at recalls, it looks like Subaru does the same thing with covering it by anti corrosion if the frame is still "good".

Yeah, I could reach down and find the appropriate knob/lever/switch without looking on past vehicles. My current vehicle at least has buttons on the steering wheel for volume and changing preprogrammed stations. It may have voice commands for other stuff, but figuring those out and remembering them is too complicated for my brain. I don't use voice commands for my phone (nor do I have alexa or similar systems) - it just isn't something I am interested in.

Fluid film doesn't stay on for long. One good ride through a rainy day it most of it washes off. Best thing I've seen is bar & chain oil, thinned somewhat, sprayed on the entire underbody. Then, a nice drive down a dusty road. He's tried Fluid Film & some other stuff, but none worked as well as the B&C oil.

Saw this on Youtuber "Mustie1 " channel...he lives in NH and deals with your salt issues too.

There’s a similar riff on the bar oil called new hampshire under oil. I went with that a couple years ago as finding someone who applies this stuff and does it correctly is easier said than done by me.

Fluid film requires a day off and i drive to the other side of the state. Nh under oil, a place in town does it and I can drop the truck off and get a ride home.

I definitely seen some different options. It looked like Fluid film did good but could always be somewhat washed off. That's what I'm looking for. If it doesn't offer enough protection I'll try cosmoline or woolywax next.

I have had good luck with painting clean, new engine oil on the underside of a 1988 Jeep Cherokee.
I do this every Fall. I put on a conventional SAE 20W-50 oil. Admittedly, I do not drive much over
    the winter.

When I was younger, also in the Spring, I would coat the underside with new, clean engine oil.
I do not try to wash off any salt. Probably would be a good idea, though. But I cover the metal surfaces
with new, clean engine oil. Over time, dust sticks to the oil and forms a black layer. It is a
mess underneath. I wear my oldest "mechanic clothes" anytime I work on something under
    the vehicle.

As you probably know, in New England, the car bodies rust out and fail inspection before the
drive train wears-out. In my opinion, preventing rust of the body is the most important
    maintenance of a vehicle.

Funny we just got the 4 free covid tests from the gub'ment. Magically the expire dates (according to the web site you have to go to) got extended by 12-15 months from what's on the box. You have to go to the web site and find the mfgr & lot number, then it tells you how many months have been added.
So they're using left over, expired stock and saying those dates on the box don't mean anything.

I've been ordering mine off zon. My wife did fill out the form for the free ones, haven't gotten them yet. We both got covid (again) last week. The kids don't have it yet, or already had it recently and are currently immune.

Most expiration dates, at best, are extremely conservative. Cans of green beans are still good after that date, but it gets people to throw them out and buy new cans (and last I knew, charities, boy scouts etc won't take them). Admittedly, medications and testing supplies are a bit different from canned food, but it doesn't surprise me.

On a personal note, I unpacked the P43 last night and it is up and running. My original plan was to wait and just use the mini split until later in the season. But now that I can see how much electricity it uses (thru my solar app), I prefer the stove. The MS doesn't use THAT much electricity, it has just been so overcast this month, that for the last 5 days I have nearly used more than the array is producing; produced 60.7 kwh and used 51.1 kwh. And the cloudy pattern is supposed to continue for several more days (it has been gloomy most of the summer).

And let's face it, I just like everything about heating with the pellet stove (except the cleaning, but that's minor).

I may switch to the MS during the day, but with the nights being colder, for now, the P43 is being put to work.

At this point of the season, we sleep without any heat on. But when we get up, I crank the mini split for about an hour or two, and the house is warm for the day. The stove has been maintained and is ready to go when the inevitable happens.

I'm curious on the comparison between the MS and the stove juice usage if you don't mind me prying?

Been doing the same with the oil heat for the last couple of day. With the weather outlook I think I can get by until tomorrow before the stove gets turned on.

I’d think once the igniter turned off usage would be pretty low.

I fired up the stove last week and opened the windows to get past the first burn of the season smell. We’ve been doing fires in the fireplace during the evening and sleeping with a window open.
