Driven by this the last few mornings on my way to the job. Sycamore. Hope they arent planning on hand splitting it. Try it sometime and find out. Makes messy splits so i pass on when encountered even though i have a hydro. IMG_4104.JPG

Smaller rounds may pop somewhat clean with a hydro but its close to elm IME. Miserable chit.

How do we know that under the camouflage bark there isn't BTU gold hiding in there?!?  The fact that nobody here posts about sycamore "scores" speaks volumes :picard:

I believe Locust Post has split and burned sycamore. It can split ok of it sits for a while, or if you lucky. I tried to split freshly cut sycamore and gave up after two rounds. Some I rolled into the woods and the others are holding the sheet metal down on my stacks. I think they have similar output to silver maple.

I hope the homeowner is a jerk and some tree service delivered a load of instant karma to him. If he's a nice guy struggling to get by in the world, happy to get his first load of "free heat" I feel bad for him :picard:

It almost looks like they took a tree down in that person's yard and keft it for them.
I reckon thats a stump at the bottom center?

Never split or burned any, but as with Elm, Id be willing to try!

So what's the deal with it? Is it harder to split when green or dry and starting to check? Or is it just plain nasty any time any where?

I dropped a big sycamore in 2020. I've already burnt all the limb wood and have at least a cord of splits that I may get into some this winter but likely more like next winter. I did not have much trouble processing it like all the dreadful naysayers talk about.

Maybe you got lucky? All sycamore not created equal? You used a hydro correct?

Wonder what jrider's experience is with it?
