It was a cool, rainy morning here today, looked at a couple more tree jobs my buddy from work lined up. Three large, technical Norway maples at two different locations, and a medium sized dying hemlock tree at a third. Lotsa stuff lined up, looking forward to those norways! We also dropped a technical dead locust this morning, it was supposed to be a drop and go.....until the tree hung up in another one! In the pouring down rain, I had to notch and piece the leaning beast down. That's a tricky job for anyone, let alone in a cold downpour. Got the tree on the ground though, all was fine in the end. Tomorrows job is a really big sugar maple, I'll be saving the trunkwood for my stacks and the rest is going to a friend's stash. The norways and hemlock I looked at this morning will all be split small and used in the maple syrup evaporator come Feb/March.......
Scotty do you have any pics of the hung-up locust? I'd be interested to see how a pro takes down a hung-up tree like that.
RO, I wish I could've taken pics but it was POURING....didn't want to fry my phone (it has a cracked screen to boot, it stayed in the truck). I will most certainly do a tutorial on that very subject here soon, maybe even this fall up on my buddy's ground on the mountain. He has DOZENS UPON DOZENS of standing dead leaners up there. I have a method involving a rope and reverse wedge cut method that works really well....too technical to describe but once you see it I think you'll agree it's a pretty good method of doing those tricky trees.....
Scotty, that is a good idea if you can post pictures because most of the members just don't have experience with this sort of thing. Hey, it will even help the old farts.
Reverse-notch and back cut worked out pretty good for me too freeing up leaners. I've only ever had 1 that I dropped that hung up. And all the ones I've done solo were small. I now how exciting those can be - good work!
Glad you got it down safely. It looked like rain here today so I started out doing maintenance on equipment and ended the day cutting wood. Got close to 2/3 a cord cut split and stacked.
Was supposed to do that big sugar maple tomorrow morning but my cutting partner just texted me and said he can't make it. So I may do a 40' red maple across town instead.....then a smaller Norway maple at my grandfather's place afterwards. We'll see what the morning looks like first.
Well I'm heading out the door here soon to tackle a tree or two. Maybe I'll wear the GoPro on my head for some video footage today.....
No, just trying to keep things rolling. I wish there were 8 days in a week (an extra weekend day, of course)
Love that Norway Maple! I haven't had any of that until this year. Nice on the chains, splits like a dream, good BTU's, whats not to like! Anything you want to share in terms of cutting, climbing, or felling would be totally appreciated!
Ended up not cutting today, wanted to do some work on my car and figured I'd work on it for a while. Also have to fix our one trailer, some broken welds. Might tackle that one red maple tomorrow evening. On a high note, I actually slept in today until a little after 8.....which is almost 2 1/2 hours more than normal for me.
