Finished up my cedar splitting this morning. Been working on it off and on for while. Got some bigger chunks to burn next year to see how it burns... Does anyone know how long it will take dry out the small fire starters? I'm planning on laying them out to try to dry faster. I'm hoping to use some of them this year for starters but could wait next year if it would be better.
Thinner the split, quicker the dry as with all wood. Suggest you split them kindling size and they will dry very quickly. We have a lot of eastern white cedar in my area. Makes great fire starter.
If I had access to cedar, I would be putting it in my closets, not burning it up. Love the smell of cedar. Bugs hate it.
3 minutes & 27 seconds. Seriously though, I split some soft Maple fairly small (around 1.5-2") earlier this year, and they're dry enough to use as kindling or a small fire right now. Actually, they're what I've used in the last 2 fires.......one was this morning. I would venture a guess the cedar will dry a bit faster.
You could split them down really small and then put them in the oven. Just kidding, dont do that. I would split them down really good and then lay them out in the driest, sunniest, windiest spot in the yard and let 'er bake that way. Or use a solar kiln.
Get thee some Super Cedars and all will be well. If you get enough for this year then your cedar will be great next year.
Chevy, I never had any cedar. Does it smell as good as your splits look!? I'm not sure what I would do with that, but I would try to figure out something special for sure. Great looking wood...
I know I need to order round Of super cedar. I'm almost out from order two years ago. I used quite a few for the charcoal this summer....
Love smell... But when I cut the dead tree down this summer I had ideal for it... Kindling it would become.
Lay it anywhere you can off the grass - driveway, truck hood, trailer, picnic table. It'll be ready to go for winter. I have multiple dead ones throughout the woods here, the smaller ones I just drag out whole - the limbs are broken down into one of my blue kindling totes (1/2 of a poly 55gal drum w/rope handles) The trunks get split down smaller, or I'll save the decent ones for stacking on
It is amazing what our body may be allergic to that it uses the senses of taste & smell to steer us away from. Cedar is one of the things many folks are sensitive to. Keep an eye out for a reaction with your wife & if you have any close neighbors, them as well from the smoke.
