FWIW here’s a pic of the other “maple” log from yesterday. It’s maple just not sure what kind. Not totally dissimilar to what the other tree is but not quite the same either. It’s fresher as in not dead.
Also I assume this is a black locust pod. My scores are always after they’ve been chopped down.

It’s definitely not Boxelder. Could they be big Norways? Big sugar gets flaked bark.

i just found the Catalpa. There’s one in the neighbors yard. Bark is similar but not the same tree. There’s a small maple in the neighbors yard that looks the same. Sorry guys I can’t even walk back there it’s a war zone. I only have one ankle and fell down a hill first thing this morning trying to get pics.

Brad sugar maple I’ll take. Problem is crawling around on top of that mess I found all the BIG Black Locust logs buried underneath or behind.
I should have brought lunch hahahaha

    Thanks folks.

Big mess to clear or hack though. BL the effort is worth it.

Decided to take all the maple first. Even some nice size pine logs in the back. I’ll bring those to my sawyer.
So I’ll have to come back for the BIG GOLD BARS :)

If the meat is good why not? Looks like the bark should pop off when you split them and make some fast drying wood.

Did you find out when was all that cut?

Id guestimate 2-3 years maybe. Still some dead leaves on the branches.
I got 5 sugar maples loaded and had to call it a day. Went home with a short load. Keep forgetting I’m too old to do this everyday. :)
Scared myself a bit. Entire world went bright bright, couldn’t keep my eyes open. Sat in the truck with the AC for about 20 minutes. Tossed the tools on and went home. Feeling better already.
I’m taking a break for awhile. Have four cords of wood to deliver this week before the rain comes again. Maybe next Sunday I’ll mosey back out there.
I did snap a pic of the logs I did get before heading in the house, priorities ya know. ;) :)

Its a warm one and the sun makes it warmer. Scary stuff and smart move calling it quits. Did you have any water with you? Any snack or fruit? I keep a baggie of granola or trail mix in the truck.

had some Gatorade left from the previous day, not enough. And lifesavers :)
Surely I could have been more prepared. Moe rain coming this weekend. I’ll head back after that. Can’t drive around here after a rain, the ground is saturated. Drains well up there anyway.

Yeah supposed to be warmer the next couple days. Are you dumping logs in the field or your yard? Does the field get too muddy?

Field has that totally wet spot right at the entrance. Dear old mom won’t let me dig it out and make a driveway. She’s likes grass.
Yeah I’m dumping them in my yard where the oak and hickory logs were. Just got that area cleared of logs and it’s time to fill it up again.
If I can get another two loads of Black Locust out of that place I think I’m done scrounging for the year.
All these scores just came at a bad time. The conveyor is reversed to unload pallet pens. So everything has to go into “storage” until I can begin processing again. And with the rain I can’t even get wood out of the field.
No one said it would be easy :)

That sugar maple throws serious heat Joe. Before my black locust fetish I had a major sweet tooth for sugar maple. I still like it, and plan on cutting more at my house this winter. It can be a bear to split sometimes though, and if it's twisted or crotchety you're almost better off noodling since it won't want to stack for _____. Not like straight grained oak, that's for sure.

Tell me about it. I have a cord and a half to deliver to Guilford, but because of the excessive rain i cant access it until it dries out or freezes.:picard:

You'll get it done one way or another, but i cant believe you're done scrounging after this score!!! :faint:

That’s what I worry about. 19 ton box wedge splitter doesn’t like ornery wood LOL. I’ve had silver maple the 28 ton DHT couldn’t break. Ended up dragging most of it into the woods. I like to pick my own battles :)
