Somewhat ironic for me as well. When I was living in N.J. I was a LEO from 1972-82. During that time I obtained this "career change dog" from the Seeing Eye as well. K-9 Willie was excused from the Seeing Eye for having too much of a " Extrovert Personality" for their standards so he was donated to my department as the first member of the newly formed K-9 Unit. He went on to have a very noteworthy 6 year LE career. Upon retirement, he lived out his days with my wife and I. He was very biddable, but could turn it on when he was working. He and I had been trained by the Philadelphia Police K-9 Unit and he was certified as a general duty K-9. He had many finds and captures including one where he tracked and pushed out a serial shooter who had murdered 6 people before turning the gun on himself. For that track we were presented the the Medal of Honor from the state of New Jersey. His pleasant personality allowed us to put on many public demonstrations and he especially loved being around kids. Garcia is the spitting image of him. Best of luck with your new buddy.

Eddie does not approve of tropical storm Ophelia, nor does he care for his splint. Soon enough, the storm will be gone and the splint will be off, but right now, he's miserable.

That’s a great story. The Seeing Eye has a family day once a year for the puppy raisers. There is a display/wall of fame for dogs that have gone on to K-9 and similar careers. I will have to look for Willie next time that we go, presumably next summer.

The vet said that Garcia could been a candidate for a low impact LE career. From what I understand not many dogs are ‘re-assigned’ as K-9s. The family that raised the puppy gets first dibs on them and many are taken back.

They look so cute together. Glad you got first dibs when Garcia's elbows were discovered to be an issue for his originally planned work life.

Yes Seeing Eye had the same policy back then. Willie was given back to the original puppy raiser who wanted to donate him to our department when were put out a request looking for a suitable candidate. In current times the large majority of K-9's are swinging over to using Malimois

This is Baker. Daughter found him laying in a field last Thursday morning. Story is that his owner passed and the dog was on his own. We are trying to find a good home for him as I post this. 16959920266195669739835723438253.jpg IMG_1428.jpg

He looks like a nice dog. It seems like finding him a home is realistic.

Shouldn't take long. He is very mellow and knows basic commands. Sticks real close outside as well.

Tucker turned 1 yo this week. He's really turning out to be a great dog! Miss July has been taking him to obedience classes and he's learning. (We've done obedience and some agility classes with all our guys)

Got a new shooting target at the gun shop for his birthday. I figured its a hard pliable rubber for shooting, surely he can't tear it up too fast. Lol
