Agreed. Get them off the ground and covered. I've burned ~1/3 cord of chunks, so far.

You might even gave some hardware cloth hanging around somewhere.

Covering kept the leaves out of mine.

The snow is hiding it but both piles are on pallets (except for a few pieces that have rolled off). I didn't mind the oak being uncovered however I've had at least a minimal cover on the other pile since last fall. I have five empty pallet bins so will be using at least two of those to store all these chunks/uglies when I clean up the mess.

We had around 5 inches last week before it transitioned to a mix. Just enough to make everything an icy mess and another winter wearing microspikes while processing firewood!

    Thats good!
We've burned through many of our chunks, saving the rest for spring shoulder season.
When do you use yours typically?

This is the first I've had an amount like this. I've usually had them scattered across the racks.

I burned one CH earlier this year. I'm hoping to burn more chunks in the spring.

So cool days we ran a pine fire. On days where we wanted a longer fire, we tossed some uglies on top of the pine. Im on the fence about collecting uglies, just because they need extra handling.........
In stacking, storing separately that is. But they burn nice.

I use a Tote for uglies. Actually, I currently have three and need a fourth! A tote works great.

Sirchopsalot , your shed is awesome. That clear or somewhat clear roof... do you think sunlight going through helps season wood or not so?

    Yawner , thanks!
I kinda thought sunlight would warm the wood directly, and maybe have some effect on mold, insects etc. But, I also like to see in there when I go in. Not many spider webs in there for sure.
It was a throw up shed. I just took materials we had laying around and threw it up. Aside from the roof, everything was locally scrounged. I was a bit worried that the construction was too light, but it's survived a couple good blows.

A buddy in NH said he has a couple of plastic pallets, and did I want them? Hell ya'!!

We're meeting Saturday, along the MA/NH border, for lunch and the handoff.

I was able to empty one of my cylinders. A little raking/cleaning up, and I'll be good to go.

Once in place, I'll probably move what's in the left bin, into the right. Then swap out that pallet as well.

With the totes, I just mix them in with the splits. It all burns.

I was gifted a couple of plastic(ABS?) pallets yesterday. Today was put them in use day.

Nice fit between the other ChunkHausen and a couple of compost bins.

Some bricks under the front edges to account for some ground slope.

    IMG_20231001_093951.jpg

All put to bed for now. The empty bin will be filled over time.

Not to change the subject but how do you like that yard cart for moving firewood Mike? We typically use a one wheeled wheel barrow but it looks like your cart can hold more wood. Pretty easy to push/pull? Thanks Mike.:)

That’s really cool Mike! A great way to dry and store the stuff that doesn’t fit nicely in the regular stacks.

I've had that for easily 30yrs. It has moved many cords. It's stored indoors out of the weather.

Other than tightening nuts/bolts now and then, and putting air in the tires, it's maintenance free.

It's 2 splits long. Because of the weight forward of the wheel axle, it's easy to move when full.

I'd recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade. They ain't cheap.
