I rented a mini excavator today. My wife has been taking care of her sisters horse because her sister doesn't have land. The horse is 34 years old. The power company is not properly maintaining the power line on my property. There are lines that cross my driveway that are 11' 4". The machine is 10' 3"ish and my dump bed trailer is 28" high. So I had to unload the trailer on the lower drive, move the truck, then drive the mini excavator to the dig site. Then I had to do the opposite to load back up. Not utility savy, I don't know what these 3 lines are but I'm not touching them. Not my job to keep the right of way clear. The lines lead up to the distribution poles. The three lines with the black insulators. They are sagging every bit of 2 foot at the driveway. I operate a crane at work, drive a 57,000lb truck I had a hay business, and owned several tractors. I have never operated a mini excavator and I did alright. Unloading has a pucker factor for sure. Deere 17g loaded on the way in. Straps, I know I know, the place I rented it said it was ok and it was 5 miles from home. Got it unloaded. I put my firewood rounds to good use. I placed them under the trailer so it wouldn't bounce up and down. Slow and steady. This machine had a beeper, its annoying and unnerving while backing off the trailer. I kept turning it off but the beeper would only turn off for the current move. As soon as i stopped moving and got moving again I'd have to turn it off again. Getting going. Keep on digging. I ended up with a hole about 5 "wide, 7" deep and 8" long. Should be good. I'm going to fill it in with the bucket on the tractor. I parked up top the hill to eat and hose off the bucket before returning.
A 3.9 acre piece of land had been up for sale with an asking price of $168,000.00. I saw it just sold for $150,000.00. It is across the road from my land. They will drop a lot of money to not only build a house but put in a driveway, drill a well, put in a septic system. Looking forward to meeting the new neighbors.
Horse grave? Things that make you go "bzzzt poof"! The lines with one insulator are "low voltage" (but can still ruin your day) the one at the top there that has the tall grey insulator with all the ribs on it, that'n will make ya wake up dead...it may not apply to this little one, but we were taught in crane school that on high voltage lines that if you count the number of insulators (ribs) in the stack...each one is worth 10,000 volts. Nice job...looks like fun, I love runnin diggers!
And I used to get beef and bean burrito too. I'm down to that, Chalupa supreme, and hard taco. I wish I could imitate the red sauce they put in the burritos at home, that and the refried beans. We usually water down the refried beans at home but it's missing some flavors Taco Bell beans have.
Yup horse grave. Better to choose the time than have to figure something out after it happens. Plus winter is coming. I'm going to have to get on the right of way tree crew the next time they come around. I'd think that it should be at least 15 feet up, but what do i know. Its definitely at good time running an excavator. Clay is tough stuff, almost no top soil to speak of. I can see how a tilt back trailer would make loading and unloading a breeze compared to the dump bed.
