The plot thickens. It looks like there are 2 separate species there. The ones with the black metal stain inside I'm positive are oak. The others, something else. I'm not sold 100% on maple either. I wonder if that's a big pecan based on the dark center? Have to see what leaves are on the ground.
Now that you point it out in the photos I see the difference. Well, I guess I learn the hard way. It will however keep us warm, good shoulder wood I suppose.
What did the rounds with the brown center smell like? Was it especially heavy with tight growth rings? Or if you split it already, was it stringy? If that’s pecan you scored really well!
I haven't had the chance to split any of it yet, been dealing with my leukemia doctors the last few days, they feel I might have to start treatment soon. I might get the chance tomorrow to do a little splitting, we'll see. I do remember when I was cutting into smaller rounds some of it had a bad smell to it and it was harder to cut and heavier to load on the trailer than the maple and ash I'm used to dealing with.
Tight growth rings, heavy, brown center and an almost urine smell indicates pecan or possibly hickory. I think you did great regardless. As much fun and personal satisfaction we might wrest out of the firewood game, it’s trivial in the grand scheme of things. What’s important is that you rest up and face each day as it comes. If you need to talk there are plenty of good folks here willing to listen.
Couldn't quite place it when I was cutting it, but now that you mentioned it, it did have a urine like smell to it. I'll see if I can get some close up photos tomorrow.

That bean pod looks more like a black locust pod, definitely not catalpa. Maybe Kentucky coffee tree?
That bean pod is off a Red Bud I drive under to get to the back of the yard, sorry guys, should have removed it before photo. Didn't have a chance to split any today, doing vehicle maintenance on the wood hauler, should say wood puller.
Well, the continuing saga of "What is this wood that I brought home." I took a couple of photos of a freshly split round a few minutes ago, split right apart, too hot here today to get into any serious splitting.
