Have a few of these in my woods not something I've cut before, just wondered what they are. Theyre getting buzzed up for trail cleaning. No leaves to ID them by.
Looks like something that was cut before. A stump that sprouted. TOH, Hickory and Poplar are several stumps that will sprout like that.
NO LEAVES because it is dead ? Dropped already ? Swamp maple drops early. Also will have multiple stems like that. The tree at the base looks like a 1 year old walnut.
Looks like either tulip poplar or hickory. As Chud stated the TP will send sprouts from a stump. Have some just like that in our back woods.
What part of Michigan are you in? Seems like south of Cadillac some of the species change. I vote basswood, Based on the bark at the base in the 2nd picture Looks like how some of our grow until they get about 10" then start falling over
I agree the bark does resemble young hickory, but I've never seen hickory stump sprout to that extent, and definitely not look that mangled. Basswood on the other hand is a notorious stump sprouter, even its European cousin the little leaf linden has that same habit. A quick Google search of young basswood bark looks correct. I think gwoods71 has the winning I.D.
When you cut it the saw should cut with ease, the rounds will be light, and the ends may be a bit fuzzy. If its bass, I am 99% sure it is. I have cut a lot of it, mainly just to get it out of the way, milled quite a bit too. Worthless firewood, low BTU, and never seems to really want to burn. Just chars over and takes up space. (IME)
Looked it up, you're not that far from Backwoods Savage place. He's hosted a GTG for several years, we've been to 2, stayed in Chesaning. Nice area
