Colder here. What's your temp? What ya burnin?

I came across what I think is possibly limber pine up in the higher elevation a few days ago. I can’t find any btu info on the internet about it. How does that stuff burn? How does it compare to Ponderosa pine?

 

61/70 this morning. Calling for highs in the mid sixties this week. Might have to light up w/ oil or wood at some point.

 

I actually can’t find much btu info either. I do burn a fair amount of Limber Pine though. There’s a lot of it around here. It burns hot and doesn’t produce significant coals. It’s similar to Ponderosa pine, heat wise. But it’s a bit more dense, so it doesn’t burn as quickly. It’s also not as sappy or pitchy as Ponderosa. I like burning it a bit more than Ponderosa. It’s a pretty interesting tree though. They can live thousands of years if they manage to escape the pine beetles. Because of that, I only process the dead and badly diseased trees.

Oh good. I was thinking it would burn faster than pondo so that’s good to know. I came across one that had fallen over and took it not exactly knowing what it was but thought I’d learn about a new wood. Nothing teaches as well as experience and there is only one way to get that. Damp and chilly 54. Heavy fog is like living in the clouds. The mist is traveling in a horizontal direction as I look out shop garage door.

 

51 this morning. Looks to be a nice day in store for us here.

 

Rain and cooler. Not quite "raw" yet but chilly. May have to light a fire when I get home from work.

 

We’re still bumping the 90’s here. Another sign that we’ll go straight from summer to winter.

Another unusually mild overnight. 61 now.

 

That weather doesn't sound like hunting weather.
When I think of hunting cool crisp mornings come to mind not 80 degree heat.
Can't blame you for holding off.

 

Cool at 44 here. First small fire with ash and Norway maple skinnies.

 

It was 44 here when I got up. Fourth small fire of the season. Lumber cutoffs

 

54 again here. 68 inside. If anyone was home all day, probably would have lit off the oil a couple times. Still holding out though.

 

Likewise. I keep checking the long range temp forecasts, and I keep thinking that we can make it till mid to end October before lighting up. That said, we also were 67F this morning, so we'll see.

 

It's going down to 48° tonight, lit the stove for the first time. The house was too chilly this morning. I brought in a tub of random gritzers, shrapnel, & unstackable chunks.
