A 562 spike will fit your 550 with only minute filing of one mount hole. Can do it with a chain file.

I'm posting it here. I'm not going to argue if people have a different way or no way of breaking in an engine. Not my engine. :salute:
This is what I'm doing currently. Obviously not riding it so you have to figure out what light loads for 20 minutes is to you. For me it was limbing which automatically creates on / off throttle usage. IMG_20230925_162557397~2.jpg

My previous process came from a 1/5 scale rc car race team who's German engine builders tried many methods for air cooled two stroke break-in. They said this produced the best results for overall power and longevity.

Tuned rich, Its basically a series of 4 heat cycles from cold to fully warmed up at idle then off to fully cool in between runs. After those its gentle driving, or cutting in this scenario, with no more than 1/4 throttle and constantly varying the engine speed for 5 minutes. Full Cool down. Do it again but no more than 1/2 throttle. 5 minutes again then full cool. Repeat again no more than 3/4 throttle. 5 minutes. Full cool. Then give her heck and tune accordingly.

See why most won't do this?

I know one other guy that does something very similar.

Very similar to my way of breaking in a new saw or new piston / ring. I'm a firm believer!!! I've also been doing this way for years and my bikes and saws were always just a touch faster than all my buddies (and brother) that used the "break it in like you're gonna run it" method.

They always would ask if I'd tweak theirs to run the same...

    Too late!!!!

Is it OCD? or just smart... I prefer to think of you guys as brilliant as opposed to flawed...

You do realize this is a thread about a saw you will never own vs one you wouldn't buy anyway right?

You are missing out by being just a Stihl collector. Seriously. Oh, and Senex 4 stroke saw collector too. Sell them as door stops or fancy boat anchors. You can trade me one or are you afraid you'll like the Poulan to much? :D

So I consulted a professional, huskihl , to get information on the carb needle locks as I've not encountered this style before. A splined carb tool is all that's needed. The locking collars are spring loaded and the spline tool pushes them in and out of engagement with said needles, thus allowing full rotations of them. I richened it up a smidge on both screws and went at it again with more stump shortening and wooden pasta making. The saw is coming around but doubtful it will ever be as strong as a stock 241. Ported is a different story. I know for a fact they run with a ported 241. I wore thin cut resistant gloves today with a neoprene layer on the business side and I didn't notice the hands today. Didn't run nearly as long but I think it makes a difference. IMG_20230926_093511206~2.jpg IMG_20230926_093502961~2.jpg IMG_20230926_093427856~2.jpg IMG_20230926_103801027~2.jpg

This is the most intricate 'break in proceedure' description I have yet seen. Kudos to them though...usually if you find one in a manual it will be extremely ambiguous.

Well this settles it. I like the looks of the Husqvarna better than the RedMax. Not from a quality standpoint. They are identical except for colors and the RedMax doesn't have the molded inlay in the top of the air filter cover. Red max doesn't have the felling sight line in black. Thats it. The orange / grey looks better in person. I thought I'd prefer the red / black. My current plan is the 543 is getting the XS treatment unless after identical break-ins the redmax has significantly higher compression or noticably more powerful. I doubt there will be any difference in performance between them.

I'll be porting the left over saw at some point.
