Finally a good FBM find and close to home. Checked it out yesterday and was able to cut a load of cherry this afternoon. Biggest cherry ive ever seen with a 42" stump cut off that had twin trees. Also sugar maple and an unknown that turned out to be Katsura tree. (its an ornamental tree native to China and Japan) Here's that thread Totally Stumped by this Mystree. Good load of cherry cut today. PITA random length tree service logs so i cut my 16". Lots of waste. Cut a couple katsura logs and they split easily. Kinda wavy grain and not much smell. At least another good load or two of cherry there plus a sugar maple that maybe a bit far to schlep out and the katsura should i decide to take some. Leaving gnarlies behind. Have a deadline of sometime next week.
All right, I knew you’d come through Beautiful cherry there and the Katsura doesn’t look too bad if’n you decide to take some of it too.
I miss the blue tape Nice score! I’m interested to find out if Katsura is good firewood. There could be a few in my future.
There wasnt too much on the way of nicer rounds and the way it was randomly cut too. The two rounds i halved were as heavy as the cherry. I crushed a handful of leaves and no aroma other than leaves. There a decent amount of smaller 4-6" cherry in double length size that i may cut there or take as is in a future load. Rather overwhelming when i backed up to it and got out. Luckily i talked the guy into letting me drive over the yard as he insisted park on the road in his listing. My hefting and schlepping days are over....but i will schlep BL and MB of course.
I searched today on my down time at the shop and I couldn’t find anything on the katsu btu rating. Looks a little wavy in the grain, might make some nice project wood? If it’s softer maybe it would turn nice.
I also tried to find info on the Katsura today for btu's, janka hardness, etc and found nothing. Youre going to have to burn some and let us all know.
Problems with septic and leeching fields. Roots i think he said. Newer owner who has had several other trees removed. My research says its good for carving too. Very few mill length logs though.
You found that on Marketplace?!?!?! Super nice. I scour FBM probably several times per day and never get anything that good. And even if something that primo came up, it'd be 'spoken for' in about five minutes. You gotta be on your toes around here, but I'd guess it's the same down there. Nice job!
Yes. It was a new listing less than an hour old and in town, I went and checked it out right away after the rain had stopped. He claimed someone had taken several wheelbarrows full but think he was BSing to have me get there sooner. There's plenty of free wood on FBM around here, but a lot of junk ie old and rotten etc. Nothing of quality close by. My last few PU fulls have come from far away, a couple i was in the area already. Always an adventure!
Unloaded at storage. Stack is 6.5 x 6.5 With other cherry from the weekends cut (double row left stack) i have well over a cord to process. A lot more at the score so the tally will go higher.
Looks like a lotta good wood! Deadline till what? Homeowner comes out and cleans it up, or he’s having the tree guys come finish cleaning it?
Stumps getting ground this weekend. New septic going in next week. I dont think tree guy coming back.. Maybe bulldozed and hauled away? I didnt get too specific with him.
Unsettled weather again today. Dry enough later and nothing on the radar map so i hit the score again. Another good load of cherry. Did get rained on near the end pretty good, but stayed until PU was full. Funny how just over a week ago i needed a 1/4 cord of cherry to finish a stack and now i have a cord and a half in the woodyard. Probably another full load of cherry and another of cherry small, shorts and nuggets.
