Well, without getting into a huge project or really messing up the roof I determined there wasn’t much I could do about replacing that 2x8 that’s nailed into the sheathing. It’s pretty solid still except for a bit on the end. I just replaced what I could get at with treated and will reassess in a couple years. Should last that long at least, the original lasted almost 30 years and that was untreated lumber. I have kicked around the idea of getting rid of the porch and building a mud room. Wife isn’t sold on that though, she loves the porch.

I hear you about summers being busy and not being on FHC in summer time. I've been doing that too. I log back on in late summer and go on like usual through spring. Maybe this next summer I'll have more time and be able to log in more?

I love that garage. That's something that I need badly. I mean I have an attached 2 car garage, but that isn't nearly enough for what I need.

Sorry but I have to agree with your wife:thumbs:. The porch is an important architectural detail for that house and if it were mine I would definitely save it!

here is my vote to save the porch. it really makes the house stand out and look special. I love porches like that and only had one place we lived in that had a great porch. The one we have now is too windy in the summer to enjoy.

I breached the mud room/ porch situation last night and was met with a resounding, “No way are you getting rid of my porch.” So I guess that’s it! Porch will be staying and rebuilt down the road. We could definitely use a mud room as it’s pretty messy up here and you walk directly into kitchen but I agree that the porch fits this house and makes it. Now the fun part starts, the planning. I’m picturing t&g ceiling and maybe some white oak floors! Whatever I do it’ll be done right and I’ll never have to touch it again in my lifetime. Probably get two tree more years out of this one with the few patches I did.

Figure I’ll update this thread since it’s been a year. Quite a bit of small things have been picked away at, couple larger projects.

Let’s see, been picking away at clearing the endless supply of dead ash.

Surprise surprise we needed a new well! I knew it was low producing when we moved in but finally had a yield test done, .16 gpm on a 6” pipe which I’m not sure how but we somehow adapted to for a year. Both drillers I received estimates from said they would try a rehab if the well was newer but it was well past its prime(early 70’s) and money would be better spent on a new larger diameter well. Went with a 10” casing and we’re getting 2.5 gpm which still isn’t great but it’s what’s standard around here.

Hired someone to regrade a bit around my barn as I wasn’t totally satisfied with the original work. That turned into clearing 170’ of pond berm of approximately 40 trees, installing a drainage inlet and running the barn gutters and French drain 140’ to the road, and I also had him dig out the remnants of my huge ash tree. Then power raking and seeding/straw the whole area.

Also had concrete in the barn poured along with the lean to. Little guy was pretty pumped about that as the crew let him
    Puddle and finish some mud!

Wish I had some before pictures of what the berm looked like but it’s a drastic difference. Gave me a lot more yard down below the berm which is great. Pics of around the barn and the new yard. Of course grass was planted at the start of an unusually long hot streak mid September but I diligently watered and got it germinated. Came in a lot better than I was thinking when I saw that week long 85 degree forecast.

Don't cut yourself short, it's picking away at the small things that make it your family's home along with the journey together.
    Your doing great

I have an old house from the twenties/thirties. Refurbished in the sixties. There are times I'm tempted to tear it down and start over or at least gut it (again) and at least do something a bit more creative. At 71 I can live with the way it is and just keep doing the maintenance.
