That nest looks almost exactly like the one on my shed.
Had bald-faced hornets in it. Nasty fuccers.

Raid might spray 22 feet, but not in any wind.

I'd rather not be any closer than a can will allow me to be.

 

I usually use the long range spray that shoots a foam. It immediately plugs the nest entrance . Spray in the late evening when they are all in the nest and trap them there! The little rat bastages!

 

Be careful for sure. I would soak it down good with spray then use a nice long pole and knock it down then get out of dodge in a hurry.

 

I also prefer the foaming spray and hit them after dark. Never been stung that way yet

 

GOOD thing you found it before using the weed whacker.

Found a yellow jacket nest in the ground next to a stack. Used the soapy water spray and got rid of most of them.

 

Operation "Get 'em" commences at 20:00 hrs.

Shoutout for a great bee killing product...Bee Bopper. Some utilities in my area used to buy it by the pallet load. If contact is made, the target will die. I have used other stuff that has worked ok. Nothing that works as well. *It does leave a residue. The residue will continue to kill. 3/4 of a can into the entrance of the nest in the barn saw it completely dead the next morning. I like using diesel, but application is not always easy. This stuff sprays a good 15-20 feet.

 

The 1st attack was at 20:30 hrs. Not dark enough at 20:00hrs



Reevaluate in the morning

 

Ok... the foam worked well. No sign of a hornet until I started messing with the nest.


I tossed a piece of wood. No hornets.


The wood was a piece of perfectly seasoned red maple, I think

I grabbed a garden tool and noticed a solitary hornet, moving sluggishly.

I sprayed it again. Each time I spray, the nest tears a bit.


I'm calling it a success

 

I got 3 of the 4 nests I dosed last weekend. The one that was obscured is now easily viewed as they cleaned the debris out in front of the entrance. They'll get it sometime this week. Two of the three nest kills were with Bee Bopper, the third was diesel. The fourth will be diesel.

 

I have been getting some in our bathroom the last couple days. Found their entrance to our house outside the other day. Several applications of foaming has not killed them. Onto Sevin dust 10. We will see how that works. They have been active till late at night. Even this morning at 5 am they were milling around outside and doing some flying.

 

My neighbor had several nests within the structure of his many times remodeled and added on house. They started coming into the living area through light fixtures and pipe/vent penetrations. He called in the professionals and they sprayed a slower acting agent at the entry points from the outside. As the hornets entered, they picked up the poison on their bodies and carried it to the nests. It took about a week for all the nests to die out but it completely solved the problem. He was told to seal the entry points because the critters leave pheromones that indicate that "this is a good place to nest" and next year (after your poison has degenerated) queens will again try to start nests there. Maybe your Sevin dust will work the same way. Wish you success!

 

I've had good success a few times with Sevin.
Worst case though I ever had in the house was many years ago. Honey bees had found a hole that led to an area between the dry wall ceiling in the basement and the upstairs floor. They were coming in on a side of the house I was not paying attention to, pool was later added on that side. Fall arrived and they started coming into the house that is why I noticed. They had a huge nest and I could hear them when I would get up close to the ceiling. Spray and Sevin did nothing into their entrance. One day I decided it was battle day, armed with about half dozen spray cans I started cutting the dry wall. I won but had a heck of a mess with honey hives. Hornets would have been a bit tougher.

 

A few years ago we had some get into the attic through a crack around the gable vent. They chewed through the ceiling and swarmed the bedroom. What a mess!

 

I saw no hornets outside when I got home yesterday, but they have been finding their way into the bathroom still. Most are dying and lethargic but we are getting several per day. My wife got tagged yesterday. Hopefully the Sevin does it's job and kills off the rest.

 

I killed a white faced hornet nest (like that one) this year under the eves of my house with Permethryn. The next day the Yellow Jackets were in and out of that nest eating the dead wasps. Insectisidial canabalism. It was a two-fer!

 

Tonight I saw a yellow jacket feeding on a dead bug that a spider had wrapped up in its web. Talk about dumpster diving.
