    Hey all,
New here since I finally have time after buying an old farmhouse and completely gutting it and fixing it up, basically everything is new in the house, minus old stone foundation. That being said one of the final steps was to install a freestanding wood stove. Call me a tin foil hat guy, but after going though what we did a few years ago I had to get my family out of town and be a little more self reliant, since I have little faith in our wonderful government. Hence the purchase of the old house and 8 acres with lots of trees for firewood that came with it. We have a big garden, chickens for eating/egglaying. When we first bought the house 2ish years ago we had 15 big oak, pine, and maples that needed to come down, I had no time to properly split the wood, but it is cut in 15 inch lengths sitting in my shed. And now I am finally getting to the point of having time to split it. Most of the small diameter pieces are dry enough for this winter, but the larger rounds will be ready in a year or two I figure. In the coming winter I look forward to clearing out the dead/fallen trees in my woods and having an abundance of wood for future years. I Look forward to learning a lot from this group.

Welcome Allman27 from another cheese head. With 8 acres of woods, you should be able to get a lifetime supply of firewood. I have heard you can get a half cord per acre without running out of wood. I have about that much woods and I can't keep up with what mother nature gives me. What part of the state do you call home?

Indeed, I have some massive oaks that are down in the woods and will be a winter project for me. I am hoping to never buy wood again, it also helps I can get free logs from work as I work for a municipality that cuts down terrace trees all winter long. I am located in the central part of Wisconsin, surrounded by many lakes and rivers.

I am down to 12 chickens right now after putting a few in the freezer and soup kettle, a bunny that is my daughters, and a few barn cats to keep the rodents away. Next year looking to add a few pigs.
