For those of you who enjoy the sun and being outdoors as much as I do/did, You've heard the saying, cover up and take care of your skin. Well, here's a public notice for you and especially fair skinned folks. I'm now on Basil cell skin cancer x3 again and they're about to cut some out of my ears! LUCKY, I don't have melanoma. I was always a baseball cap guy, now my ears and sides of my face are suffering. I'm in my 60's and if I was smart many years back, I would have tried to do better with my skin. Now is the time for those Big brimmed hats or the famous straw hats, cover your whole face and ears. All I'm saying is, protect your skin. This crap I'm going through isn't fun, This past encounter with the Dermatologist, she burn't 15 spots of pre-cancer off my face. I go back again on the 9th, OH JOY! Please take some words of wisdom, Learned the hard way! I'm gonna be fine, but don't think it can't happen to you, it can and does!!!
Sorry to hear Dave and thanks for the heads up. I’m definitely guilty of not being more diligent when I’m outdoors.
Man, sorry to hear about what you're going through, definitely good advice! Do you think all of your years of welding could be a contributing factor? I'm not a welder by trade, but occasionally stick some steel together and often think about it Hoping for a quick recovery and clean bill of health!!!
I'm/was that same guy! They have been freezing my face spots now for several years. Others pop up and I had some biopsies taken a couple weeks ago on my ears and the Doctor called me yesterday and said I had 2 positive for Basil cell. They are small spots, but they're still (spots) Kinda why I wanted to put this out. My Ancestry of the Irish and English decent and fair skin is playing a big part in this mix and she even said that.
Yes!!! I've been around lots of very bright UV light most of my working career. I'll be fine and it's caught in it's early stages; That's the Important thing.
Understood My dad has a number or cryo freezing. Additionally, some Mohs surgery. All due to repetitive sunburns over the years. His comment today is that it was probably worth it (being out in the sun, no protection) at the the time. I'm a believer of sun screen and UPF clothing, as well as wide brim hats. Best of luck to you Dave!
Here's one of other companies that have clothing with some protection from the sun's rays. Huk Pursuit Performance Hoodie
Glad you caught it early, much easier to work with then letting it prolong.. I'm reaping fruits of sun already too... I've had 2 hits off my nose and top of my lip... plus I have Melanoma in my family tree line... double whammy... Good luck and keep on top of it...
Judy had so many spots removed we quit counting. Toward the end she finally said, "Enough, I'm not going back again." She always said it wasn't all that bad but over time it just got to be too much. Of course with her red hair and freckles she was very fair skinned.
Yeah, I sure understand that! They burn't the HELL out of me the last time and it seems like every 3rd or 4th time they hammer the Hell out of me. I got the 2 spots that tested positive on both my ears and you know my shoulder had a big removal! The Doctor hit a mass on my arm that hasn't come back yet. Many of you know this drill! I would just like to let folks know that this stuff is real and why I'm putting it out!!! As we all age, the Demons come out to play! Ah, as long as they keep making Beer, I'll get through it!
Sorry to hear this Dave. I'm big on staying out of the sun for prolonged periods as I burn quite easily. My doc wants to put me on Vit D tablets as I tend to be deficient.
Very wise words. Great PSA Dave. Wish I could give some of this wisdom to my kids (23 and 20). My boy just told us he went to the local dragway yesterday with a friend and he got completely fried. Best of luck w treatments.
Let'm read this above! I think we all were there at one time. I was a beach kid, surfer, swimmer, fishing, baseball, ATV's, etc... All the outdoor stuff in the sun. I still love being outside, But it does catch up to you!
Glad to hear you're getting it taken care of Dave and that it's not worse. I work outside every day and some days I spend hrs on a mower in the middle of a field. When I was younger I definitely didn't pay enough attention to using sunscreen but these days it's a priority. I always add extra sunscreen to my ears and the back of my neck.
So do you just point out suspsected spots to your GP at a regular physical or are you all going to a dermatologist for a "scan"?
Normally the Lady give's me the once over every visit, every 6 months. They/she has it in the records of spots on my face, arms and neck. I had a big spot on my shoulder last year that required surgery. I now go to the Dermatologist every 6 months because of these and have been for a few years now. These spots are not new, but some are metastasizing into small cancer spots. If left alone, things could get ugly. If you catch them now, they are fairly easy to treat with a little cutting and burning.
