Found this petrified hickory stick and it feels like finding $100. Now I just need a chainsaw. It’s about 16’ long 6-8” diameter.
    Fell out this giant Hickory.

I like seeing the grain I'm the wood. Some of the ugliest are the most beautiful.

I’m going to keep this Hickory and another tree separate just in case I get some cooking customers.

It’s funny how small wood looks until it’s sitting in the back of a pickup. I’m always pleasantly surprised!

Probably as hard as dead BL. Hickory punks rather fast unfortunately.

Nice little grab. A couple years back I scrounged a downed roadside shagbark limb that was worse off than that, full of bug holes to boot. Didn't even bother splitting it as it was about 6-7" diameter and barkless. Burned it 4-5 months later and it threw some serious heat once it got going.

It had me checking the edges, because the teeth were bouncing so bad. Also checked the bar oil and battery charge. Tree ripened Hickory is no joke.

Feels like it will give unreal heat. It crossed my mind to not split it. I noticed another dead Hickory yesterday about 100 yards from another dead one I already removed. Full canopy and just shut down. Similar to oak wilt. No root disturbance nearby. We’re in a drought with extreme heat, but that shouldn’t shut them down that quickly. Weird since I don’t see dead hickories that often.

A buddy dropped this off the other day.

    ~11ft
    IMG_20230823_103723.jpg

He cut it from an apple tree.

I'll probably cut a few cookies from it for use in the smoker. The rest gets put on a firewood stack.

If I had to summarize my hoarding experience in five quotes this would be one.

Reading it felt like finding $10.
