The excavator marked trees to be taken down to make room for my sand mound. I have been under the weather, but time marches on. The humidity took a nose dive the last few days so I took advantage yesterday. 14 trees were marked, thankfully they were able to avoid any large trees. Nearly all are black birch, which only makes up about 3% of the trees on the property. I took down 7 trees between 5”-15” DBH. I definitely took the easy road today, only taking one load to the splitting site. Hoping to enlist a few friends to finish the job next weekend.

Cool. I've never seen black birch, or any birch, around here. When I first saw them I thought it was cherry. Nice work

Black birch a favorite here! What did it smell like to you when cutting?

I like Black Birch. That looks like it will be pretty easy to split. You will enjoy the burn and smell of the smoke too when you do.

My thoughts exactly. I’m assuming it’s a backstop for chootin’ but what do I know?

X2, I was thinking the same thing. Great firewood score, but need more input.

Nice stuff there. Nothing wrong with Goldilocks wood. Nice when you have full trees to cut your own length.

Feel better soon and take it slow.

Alright everyone, I hear ya barking’. I’m clearing for a septic sand mound. Building a house in the woods! I actually already did this a few months ago, but the township balked at the location so I’m at it again, but this time in the heat. Not ideal, but I'm up against the builders timeline now. Thanks for the well wishes.
They found some monster boulders digging the foundation. The rocks pictured were 2-3 boulders before they were busted up with the hammer hoe. Putting a wood furnace in the basement so I “needed” a slider walkout in the basement.

Had some help and finished the job. No pics of the final cleared land but a couple in progress and the final round stack. About 5’ high, 20’ long and 4’ deep.

You got that right! Once I move and the weather cools I’ll be nibbling at it a few hours per week. There is also this pile to tackle…
