Couple months ago my friend Mike that I helped remove (and mill) the big walnut for, asked if I’d be interested in another big tree. They bought a second property to move into, and there’s a problem tree that needs to come down. He just messaged saying the tree guy is coming tomorrow. Lucky me, wife’s weekend to work so I’m free. Here’s some google maps pics. He says chestnut, I’ve never seen it in person. This place is again across the river, 30 miles one way but a 47 minute drive. So glad the dew point dropped lately. Guess I should start drinking water now..
Ugh, horsechestnut. From the European branch of the Buckeye family and not a true chestnut. Good luck.
Not familiar with either, but looks like a lot of BTUs although a lot of work as well and long drive. How many trips do you think it will take?
I don't mean to rain on any parades, but this is what one member had to say about it as farwood: F$@$in’ Horse chestnut!!!
I was hoping you would chime in. I know how rare straight up chestnut is so I was skeptical. It’s a favor for a friend so I’m not in it for the wood. Looks like a decent amount of rot in the base. More than likely give this to my parents. No idea. Mike offered to haul a couple loads as he has a truck too.
In that case it's a noble cause, keeping your folks warm. I'll bet it dries relatively fast out here in the East. buZZsaw BRAD cut some a few years back, maybe he can share his thoughts as I've never actually worked with the stuff before.
Hopefully it’s not full of metal. Looks like it caught at least one drunk driver. I’ll be looking for and posting chainsaw pics tomorrow.
Four years ago i scored a mystery wood that turned out to be horse chestnut. Didnt take a whole lot and it was rather miserable to hand split. Here's the thread I Think i Cut Chestnut Today? Last year i found a mystery wood roadside that also turned out to be HC. Didnt take any. The Bark Threw Me on this Mystree
I thought the same about the drunk driver. Crew is scheduled for 9. He’s going to get in touch when they start, then I’ll pack up and head out. I asked for long as possible pieces so I can cut to desired. I’m surely not going to go gang busters, there’s no rush to get it gone.
Great feedback there, thanks Brad. It’ll be perfect for mom and dad. Lightweight is a plus for them. Probably unload it here at my place, then split it in a trailer and deliver it then.
Tree looks like it’s lived a hard life. I know you’re gonna give it a good home. You getting the entire thing or just the trunk? Good idea on the water, I can’t seem to stay ahead most of the time myself
Definitely. If it weren’t for that utility line going through it, we would have done it ourselves. No telling how many times it was struck but that one huge spot part way up was recent. Mike said that section broke off and he had to clean it up. Then he had a pro come and look at it and that guy said it was best to take it down.
I’d grab the long straight branches. That trunk can go straight to the dump. I know you like the challenge but I see little return on that trunk.
Neighbor came and said tree was hit in 61. Car flipped and everything. Tree guy absolutely destroyed a chain in this cut.
