Since we finally got the sheds mostly full, took some time to clean up some scraps piles around the wood yard. We set up a kindling bin, chunks bin, and firepit bin... The kindling bin is a 3x3x7 metal rack, it's almost full, going to bolt some 2x4's on the ends and put metal panel roof on it... My cousin, that's given us most of the totes we have, gets this tote full of shorts and chunks... Got a tote full of 16-18" firepit wood We started on a big pile of mostly hickory cutoffs this morning. Had done about half before the picture. I like this style of bin better than totes for chunks, only have 2 so far... Had enough to completely fill it up... Got the roof tied on and restacked, bottom tote was on top last year, been drying 2 yrs...
All the shorts and pieces can be a pain to deal with but they do make great heat. Besides storage I don’t mind them, easy loading in the stove and some of the ugly twisted crotchety pieces have a long burn time. I have a couple bins for them so normally they just get tossed in without stacking. Yours look more organized than what mine are.
If we cut the logs, don't usually have any shorts, try to cut in multiple lengths. Limb wood, bad crooked logs or tree service drop offs generate the most.
I can appreciate the time and effort to make as many shorts and uglies fit in as small a space as possible because I've done it. Used to do it. Now I just toss them in and call it a day. Life's too short.
