X3 on the silver, although it has claims to maybe red maple. CSS now and it may be ready in six months. It dries fast. Wouldnt mind that score myself.
I like SM...just doesn't burn quite as long as sugar, still nice BTUs though, dries pretty quick too.
I really liked the one good score of silver maple that I got. Definitely not the best btu wise but I really liked how it processed and dried. Very clean wood
I cut down a 50’ foot silver that couple years back was wreaking havoc on the pool every year. I actually loved the wood. Split easy , dried fast , burned well enough. Used a lot of it in the outdoor fireplace.
I processed a huge one many years ago when the township put in public sewer (was my neighbors). The track hoe lifted most of it to let me buck. Just like everyone's experience above, it was very clean burning wood, just didn't last real long in the firebox. It seasoned in about 6-8 months and split with no issue.
I've processed a lot of silver maple. It probably my second favorite campfire wood. Similar to cherry without the good smell
Just a tidbit about Silver Maples...some of you may already know. Have you ever seen them 'turn' their leaves so that the light side is showing? They do this because they are reacting to changes in the barometric pressure in the air. When I was a kid riding in a boat on the river as I often did I had noticed the leaves seemed to do this most times just before it would rain. It was my own weather guage that I learned from experience. Not until many years later did I look up the reason that they would tell me it was about to rain. The xylem/phloem in the stem of the leaf contracts, causing the leaves to 'roll over' when barometric presure drops. Coincidentally...pressure also drops before precipitation. You might have learned something today!
Just to be clear...it will not rain *every time this happens, sometimes they don't flip before a rain. Looking outside earlier reminded me of this.
Yep, silver maple. Today the wife told me a friend had a tree taken down and wondered if I wanted the wood. She texted me a picture of the trunk and large branches - silver maple... I texted her that I would take it, but I couldn't pick it up until the weekend. Luckily the tree service had already loaded it by the time she replied, because while I do like the wood, I don't like it quite as much when it's 95 degrees outside.
