At a standstill on the build as im waiting for roofing screws so i split most of the sassafras and ash rounds from my last two scores. Been a while since i ran the splitter. Not the best day for it either as it was a sweat-o-rama. Found nails in a couple of the ash rounds. Better than finding them with the saw. Moved the nicer splits (only took the ash heartwood) to the shed next door and stacked. Fifth row finished and started sixth. I have more wood at both scores. Split over a half cord. Stacked roughly a face cord.
All the building supply places, and hardware stores stock roofing screws around here...guess I just assumed that was common in the USA in 2023...
HUGE shortage around here! No one is going to believe my actual out of pocket cost for this project. My friend has a bunch left from the barn roof he did at his daughters a few years back. Problem is its out of state. Im getting too antsy waiting and may have another source for free ones. Being the cheapskate i am ill wait till Hell freezes over for them! I did price them out and $40-50 IIRC. WAAAAAAAAY over the budget!
I think I discovered someone cheaper than me lol...I will say, Brad, I've been searching for a wheelbarrow at the dump lol.
Nothing wrong with that. Seeing how far you have to travel for wood id be taking all i could get. Once you get ahead on your hoard you can be more picky. The appeal of a three year plan.
Sometimes the stuff just finds me. Yesterday at the job i was given a couple things. One was brand new in box worth $100. The other was a used gas firepit they took apart. Ill more than likely scrap it. They were going to toss them in the dumpster
You guys are discussing grading splits with all sorts of innuendo thrown in, and I’m over here thinking I need to build a pallet pen for whatever alphabet letter misfit chunks of mine that have been lying on the ground for months now.
Do you have a nugget/shorty bin or storage? Rather than deal with them full size, cut em in half and toss in there?
I need to build one before these chunks turn punky. They’re a mix of BL, white oak, black birch, elm and sugar maple. Just need to acquire more pallets first. I just threw out a truck load of half rotten pallets I’ve had since 2020.
I've just been mixing mine in with other wood. Seems to work well with the totes since it will be harder for them to fall over.
lmao. I have grade A splits, then the chunks/ugg pile. But apparently I’ve been doing it wrong all along. Oh, I do have a metal cage for cookin wood so where do they fall in the alphabet? I’m guessing que?
I know I used to have a couple hundred roofing screws. I’ll look in the barn. The same barn the women cleaned out about 8 years ago which means I’m constantly running to Ace Hardware to buy a washer if ya get my drift. They were blue,,,, too much clash? you’ll like this. Finally finally had a eureka moment. After burning all the piles of shorts and uglies it hit me. Remember the wooden wagon stored in the woods. I’m dumping them all on that and just toss a sheet of texture 111 on top. Won’t even need to unload. Just hook up the tractor and pull it to my moms house. She loves the chunks. Smarhht
Very smarhht! Work smarhht, not hard. Of course ive yet to figure that out! Too bad you didnt have a couple to park nearby when cutting/processing. Toss them in there as you're working. When full, hook up the quad and bring it over. I processed a big Norway maple for a friend a few years back. Lots of nuggets and chunkies. His wife loved them as they were ideal handling size for her.
No worries on the roofing screws. Next time were in East Haddam, his father may have some remnants from a partial roof they did...green. Color doesnt matter. I have six different color panels going up there. I have a bunch of square drive #10 1" wood screws. Bought a huge box dirt cheap from the local lumberyard years back. Pennies on the dollar cheap. Wrong screw, but i would make it work. Really dont wanna have to caulk each one.
