Not far from jo191145 so i see future GTG fodder, but he has access to a boatload of free logs. You buying any Thom?
Is that a good deal considering the amt of bark included? Cut and tightly stacked I wonder how close to an actual cord you get.
Interesting! Now there's something i like seeing my tax dollars pay for. I go though Portland often. Wouldnt mind seeing the operation.
There’s a sign out front forbidding entry to anyone but state employees,,,,,,something along those lines. I considered barging in anyway Guess they’ll make an exception to sell slabs.
Yeah it’s like if the grocery store had a sale on banana peels and apple cores. Also, with it cut so thin I feel like it would burn too quickly. A while ago I got a bunch of hardwood mill ends (for free) and I burned through them like it was pine. Those slabs might make interesting and cheap siding for an outbuilding though!
I have the lap siding attachment for my mill but have not gotten around to installing it yet. One of these days , weeks , years .................. I don't know. Been way too busy to do much of anything. Some Cedar siding might be something to try one of these days.
Im game....well to mill some. Getting something built out of it is another story. Im a great "idea" person, but not often those ideas come to fruition!
I wouldn't mind bundling my slabs and selling them. I think I'd do 4' long bundles so it'd fit in just about any truck "bed". The lower price would also sound more attractive.
I kept a nice first cut-off of honey locust to make some kind of home brew fhc sign. Should be interesting.. Long time ago I saved a bunch of first cut slabs and gave them to my dad. He sided a small grill/smoker shack with it. Was softwood and he attached it bark side out. I should snap a pic but honestly, it's way past its prime at this point.
A cord of hardwood slabs and a cord of splits for overnight burns could be a nice combo. My experience : The bark falls off the slabs readily (probably because the slabs dry so quick) . The bark burn but they also crumble quite easily and can make a lot of mess. I threw the bark in the woods in a heap and was quite surprised how quick it got full of earthworms, bugs and tree roots. I was going to put the bark "compost" in the garden as a good soil amendment but it wasn't worth the effort fighting with the tree roots.
I've burnt plenty of slabs over the years but as long as I can get normal firewood I'll pass even if they are cheap. Slabs around here go for about 20 a bundle last I saw. Bundles here are about half the size in your pictures.
