OH MY I haven't had to deal with this for many years and I cannot clean them tonight. Dear Husband is making them bed in the garage. My nose does not work as well as it used to but WOW skunk juice in pure form is so strong and it lingers. This should have been an uneventful potty for them before bedtime.
I cant recall the best solution I found back then but this sounds quite familiar. The Recipe According to William F. Wood of the Department of Chemistry at Humboldt University, the solution you'll use on a dog sprayed by a skunk requires 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of liquid detergent. Variations of this recipe recommend mild detergent such as Ivory-brand dish soap, but others recommend Dawn-brand detergent to cut the oils. Regardless, prepare the recipe mixture only just before you'll apply it. Don't store it, as this volatile solution expands due to gas pressure and could explode if kept in a closed container.
That sucks there's a lot of skunks around here, I smelled one earlier tonight when going doing down my street. Never had a dog sprayed by one but, had some spray close by, bedroom window open woke me up in the middle of the night, so strong I had to vacate the bedroom sleep on the couch
Another member's dog got It back in June http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/index.php?threads/i-hate-skunks.4721/
Jeez, like you don't already have enough on your plate. Just be aware that if you have a flea/tick product on the dogs, the regular soap will remove it.
Shave the dogs and put a sweater on them. Seriously, sorry to hear that happened. I used vinegar on my dog when it got sprayed. Next time I will try out the hydrogen/ baking soda/ detergent trick. Yes, there will be a next time.
@wildwest, I'm curious to know what works. I know we have skunks around, but so far no hits. Casper almost got hit by a porky....the thing was turning around for the money shot when I called him off.
Boy am I glad I have an indoor cat. My sympathy to your olfactory organ, Wildwest! FWIW, Nature's Miracle makes a product for skunked dogs that really works. Might not be a bad idea to get some for future emergencies!
I am so glad right now that there are no skunks or porkies on Vancouver Island. Our three dogs may be wash and dry in 5 mins. but the potential smell boggles the mind. my utmost sympathies @wildwest
Better the dogs than you. As I remember , I got an outside bath in tomato juice & my clothes were buried. Memories
Have a memory of my father taking a shower with our dog stuffed in a big garbage bucket full of tomato juice... when I was about 8. He'd dunk her in the juice, slosh it all over her, pull her out, rinse, do it again. He told me decades later that when he went to work, everyone was asking if he could smell a skunk. He told them, nope, do you smell one?
No skunks around here this year. We always had them, but none now. Even the pesty groundhog is no where to be seen. Only a couple turkeys so far. I did see a fisher. Also, can hear coyotes at night. Even a bob cat was seen just a couple hundred feet from the house. Once all the small animals are gone, maybe the predators will move on. When I let my dogs out after dark, I pay close attention and bring them back in just as soon as they are done with their bussiness.
PapaDave, We had skunks by my previous home of 20 years where we 2-5 dogs at any given time, So I have tried more things than most. This is the best I found. They stink til their coat dries, and I catch a whiff when they come in wet from snow and rain. But its been more effective for me than other remedies, or enzyme shampoos ect. IIRC I originally found that recipe from a prominent veterinary college in colorado. Also @LocustPost posted it from further east so I am sticking with it. I don't know if its true but a gal I met today at the dentist's office said skunks like water. Interesting as my previous home overlooked a large reservior, and this home is on a lake....
